Terminal Services program not working in windows XP, windows vista or windows 7 (Tsuserex.dll)

Hi friends,
I made a terminal services program using tuserex.dll, by making an interop. I had my reference using this link
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/alejacma/archive/2010/10/13/how-to-read-mstsprofilepath-mstshomedrive-and-mstshomedirectory-properties-from-ad-vb-net.aspx

Also I retrieved the terminal services properties like profilepath, allow logon etc well in  windows servers only.

What should I do inorder to make working of my program in non windows server machines like windows XP, windows vista or windows 7?

VDI-like Setup for Household Use

I'm interested in setting up a VDI-like system for household use. In other words, I'd like to get some of the benefits of enterprise VDI in a much smaller scale - for example letting my kids connect to a virtual Windows 8 machine from school on their iPad. That said, I've got Windows Server 2012 loaded on a beefy server at my home that I use for development purposes. I've also used the real VDI capabilities of Windows Server 2012 at my work, so I have some idea that it's overkill for this project - I don't have DNS, Active Directory, etc. setup at home, and don't have any desire to set that stuff up.

So, the question is something like this... Can I use the Hyper-V functionality on my server, along with a few Windows 8 Pro virtual machines, and then allow each family members to connect to their own virtual machine via basic remote desktop. Actually, I know I can do that, the real question is can I get the benefits like RemoteFX, USB Redirection and high-quality media viewing?

I know those advanced features are often mentioned in the context of a real VDI deployement, but I'm wondering if they are also available in a simpler deployment?

Thanks in advance!

Migrate from 2008 server to 2012

Currently I've got a 2008 server (not R2) running terminal services.  The users have roaming profiles and redirected folders setup in group policy which are stored on a separate server.  I'd like to move to 2012 server (virtual) and collect the user profiles back to the server.  Any tech docs available?  I can't seem to find them anywhere.

Thanks

Locked remote desktops

Hi,

I need to deploy a "training room" style remote desktop where my users log on and then get a pre-customised desktop containing the applications and files they need for the days training. But then which reverts back to default settings for the next lot of trainees.

What is the best way to accomplish this?

I can use either Server 2008 or 2012.

Thanks

Server setting to force RemoteFX usage?

Hi guys,

Is there a setting or anything to force clients connecting to a terminal server to use RemoteFX if they are able to?

I know we can configure the client-side mstsc config to use remotefx but we would like the server to have clients use it by default if possible.

Any ideas?

RemoteApp can be started only by the Administrators

We run TS on the Windows 2008 R2 server. I'm using the RD WEB to deliver the MAS500 Desktop as the RemoteApp.

When the administrator is connecting to the server, from the workstation, everything works correctly. Other users can connect to the server ans see the RemoteApp. Once they click on the icon, the message appears "application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy.. Please use .NET configuration tool .."The usage of this tool on the workstation does not change anything.

Please help.

What needs to be done to get USB redirection working for VMs running in HyperV on Server 2012

I'm trying to get USB redirection to work with some hyperV VMs, and it seems like I've hit a wall with it.  I've been following most of the steps here, and I still can't get USB devices to appear.  First, the system details:

  • VM Host:Server 2012 Datacenter with HyperV
  • VM host has Remote Desktop Services, with Remote App Management, RD Connection broker, RDMS, Remote Desktop Services, Remote desktop virtualization host agent
  • VM guest is Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with SP1
  • Remote desktop client is Windows 8 Professional

I've set up the client policy, and remoted in selecting the devices I want to redirect (USB Phone for Lync), and tried all combinations of selecting what to do with remote audio.  It looks like it needs to bring remote audio local, and record locally, but doing that lets me do high level redirection, but not use the USB devices.

Is there anything else that I need to configure on this platform to get it to work?  Should I be able to get a USB headset to work with a remote Lync in this case?  What I'd like to do is have 2 remote desktop connections at once, each on a different USB device so I can test calls between them.  Is this even possible?  It seems like it should be.

Thanks for the help!

Folder listing results

Our customers have a folder that contains a mixture of .doc and .docx files. On one customer's Server 2008 R2 Remote Desktop sessions, the CMD Prompt command 'dir *.doc' only returns .doc files. On all of our test systems and all of our other customers' systems, this one command returns the .doc and .docx files.

Our actual issue is more complex than this, but it boils down to needing to change this one customer's system so that the one instruction returns both file types.

I can't find an environment variable that controls this. Is there some Group Policy setting?

Windows Server 2012: changing properties of RemoteApp doesn't work

When trying to change the properties of some RemoteApp's, the error below is displayed.
So far I've been unable to find more information on this error (event viewer, ...).

I've also tried to re-publish these applications but that didn't help either.

Thank you in advance.

Self-Signed Certificate for Remote Desktop Expired

One of our Helpdesk personnel got the following error when making an RDP connection from Windows XP SP3 to a Windows Server 2008 R2 server, "Remote Desktop cannot connect to the remote computer because the authentication certificate received from the remote computer is expired or invalid. In some cases, this error might also be caused by a large time discrepency between the client and server computers." It's purley for administration purposes. We aren't using TS Gateway or anything like that. I have double checked & the date, time, & time zone on both the server & client & they are all correct.

On the server if I open the certificate store in an MMC & browse to Remote Desktop\Certificates I see that the self-signed certificate expired on 5/3/2011. If I look at the same store in other 2008 R2 & 2008 SP2 servers they all have a self-signed certificate as well but the date it still valid. IT appears as though this certificate should be renewing itself automatically every 6 months but for some reason on the one server it is not. Has onyone else seen this issue before? What is the mechanism that is supposed to renew this certificate?

Thank you in advanced for any advise.

Remote Session Monitoring

In 2008R2 there was an administrative tool that allowed me to look at each of my session servers and see who was logged in and do a remote session with them if needed. Where is that for 2012. The only tool I can find is the license diagnose?

Single Sign on through Gateway

I have deployed an RD Gateway server to allow external access to my RDS farm. On my Connection Authorization Policy I selected the Windows Authentication method of "Password".

When I launch an app from my RD Web Access page I get prompted for credentials.

These credentials will be used to connect to the following computers:

1. (TS Gateway Server)

2. (remote computer)

My session hosts have "Ask for Password (NTLM)" and "Use the same credentials fir RD Gateway and RD Session Host Server"  checked in their RD Gateway settings.

How can I prevent this extra prompt?

First I have reviewed and looked at the other posts that seem similar to our issue but no help. Environment is as follows: two servers, one is  SBS 2011 and the second is a windows 2008 r2 serving as a terminal server for a specific application on the same server (non-dc). Users remote into the terminal server to access the application and starting last week they were intermittently getting kicked out and then getting "Access denied" when trying to reconnect even though their previous session was not showing in the TS manager. There is no rhyme or reason that we have been able to detect as it affects only one user and never the same user and when it does happen all other users are still fine and working ok. No event errors showing in log files and happens to internal as well as external people coming in via vpn. any help or suggestions greatly appreciated. regards and respect, Bill

Shadow failed, Error code 7044 and 120 with Multiple Monitors and Windows Server 2008 R2

We are in the process of moving from Windows 2003 R2 and Citrix XenApp 5 to Windows 2008 R2, and Citrix XenApp6.5. About half of our users and our entire IT Department have multiple monitors. Most of our users connect to a full desktop in Citrix. We had no problem shadowing our users in the old environment but in the new environment we get an error. I understand the reason for this problem is a change in how Windows 2008 R2 supports Multiple Monitors. I know this is by design according to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2484290 but the work around is not acceptable. The issue we have with the work around is that it is more time consuming and requires the user be able to accept the support request invitation. We frequently need to shadow a user when they are not at their desk, or their Citrix session is locked up.

Does anyone have a better solution or any idea when Microsoft will find a fix for Shadowing?

Remote Desktop Services - Redirection of additional supported devices is disabled by policy.

I have a Windows 2008 R2 server running the Remote Desktop Services role.  Whenever I reboot or restart the "Remote Desktop Services UserMode Port Redirector" service , I get the Event ID 36 error:
Redirection of additional supported devices is disabled by policy.

I verified that no such policy exists using RSOP.MSC.  I looked at the following location:
Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Device and Resource Redirection\Do not allow supported Plug and Play device redirection

This is set to "Not Configured".
For fun, I've tried both enabling and disabling this setting (rebooting after each change), and it had no effect on the problem.

Additionally, I verified that the setting was disabled within the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration utility:
     RDP-Tcp -> Right-Click -> Properties -> Client Settings
          Redirection
               Supported Plug and Play Devices
For fun, I tried this setting both enabled and disabled, rebooting after each change, but this had no effect on the error.

Clipboard redirection does work.

I also followed all the instructions on the following article without success:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee890928(v=ws.10).aspx

In the same domain, there is a Small Business Server, and there it works.

I hope anybody can help me on this issue, because for now my only option is reinstalling the server, and I would rather not because I cannot afford downtime that long.

Thanks!

Force IP redirection always, even if the user has conencted to the server they'll eventualy use

My problem is this:

-We currently use NLB for all of our small (2 server) RDS clusters with a central RDS Connection Broker

-I want to use our Citrix Netscalers for load balancing but I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket

-I want to use the Netscalers for load balancing (LB) the initial connection before IP redirection sends the client to the server they'll be using, that way if there are temporary issues with the LB I won't disconnect a few hundred users, just prevent anybody new logging on

-However testing has shown that the client is only redirected if they initially connect to a server that they don't end up using:

Scenario 1:

Client hits LB IP > forwarded to server1 > Connection broker says "Use server2" > Client sent server 2 IP and reconnects to server2 IP directly

Scenario 2:

Client hits LB IP > forwarded to server1 > Connection broker says "User server1" > Client continues to connect through the LB IP, isn't redirected to server1 IP

Is there any way in scenario 2 to force the client to be sent the IP of server1 to connect to directly so that there are no sessions left open through the load balancers?

Thanks in advance,

Alex

Help with Server 2012 RDS setup

$

While using Server 2008 R2 with RDS I had the following setup:-

NIC 1 - Internal - Kerberos authentication for SSO signed with domain issued cert

NIC 2 - External - RDP authentication with Internet signed cert - TMG setup to forward RDP traffic to this NIC

Even with two NICs under Server 2012 I cannot find a way to setup two incoming connections and sign each with a different cert.
Under server 2008 R2 I did not have the Gateway role installed and wish to avoid installing this role but to still achieve the same setup as I had under Server 2008 R2.

Any help is much appreciated.

Managing server 2012 RDS in a workgroup

We have been trying to manage remote desktop server 2012 in workgroup mode , all our 2008r2 server are in workgroup mode, and we are excited to use 2012, we have asked the question before and the answer we got is bellow but using PowerShell still need FQDN, please show us a way around this issue

Thanks

You will need to use PowerShell to manage your server, as you can't install the RDMS UI without a domain. The following is a good place to http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2012/06/28/introduction-to-windows-powershell-scripting-in-windows-server-2012-remote-desktop-services.aspx
