RDS Server 2012 Problem - Cannot Remove Previously Assigned VDI desktops and RemoteApps from Users.

$
0
0

Scenario:

Users assigned 3-4 RemoteApps and a Pooled Desktop during pilot phase.  Connection Broker and RDWEB Server remain the same during production rollout. The test Session and Virtual Desktop Collections were removed, and new ones created.

Accessing either the RDweb page through a browser or via the Start Screen Remote Desktop App, users who participated in both the pilot and production phases are presented with both the new working remoteapps and desktops, as well as their former assigned ones.  The old ones do not actually work, giving an instant "can't connect" error, but because many of the assigned apps are the same as those used in production, the resulting duplicate tiles / icons are problematic to say the least.

How does one clear these from the users' RDS assignments?

Do I need to purchase RDS licenses for a server used exclusively for development?

In our development environment, we have servers that more than two developers need access to simultaneously. RDS seems to be the only way to accomplish this, but obviously we'd like to avoid purchasing licensing for development servers.

Is there a way to activate RDS services for development only?

In our production environment, we actually purchased RDS CAL's, can i reuse these CAL's for development?

RemoteApp can be started only by the Administrators

We run TS on the Windows 2008 R2 server. I'm using the RD WEB to deliver the MAS500 Desktop as the RemoteApp.

When the administrator is connecting to the server, from the workstation, everything works correctly. Other users can connect to the server ans see the RemoteApp. Once they click on the icon, the message appears "application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy.. Please use .NET configuration tool .."The usage of this tool on the workstation does not change anything.

Please help.

How to move RDS licenses from one server to another

We are moving from one cloud provider to another - what is the best way to move the RDS licenses from one server to another?    We need to keep both up at the same time during the transition.

Using VDI Pool Without Remote Desktop Web?

$

Hopefully a simple question... Is it possible to have users share two identical Windows 7 VM's in a pool simply using remote desktop?
Most users on the network have their own PC, but for three rotating in and out, we simply want them to use one of our two Win 7 Virtual Machines.  No need for the web infrastructure as we have just two servers - one hosting DC, DHCP, DNS, the other file and print sharing and Hyper-V with the two VMs.

RDP 7.1 not resolving thawte certificate chain?

$

So my RDS gateway and hosts were working fine until I replaced the 2008 R2 host servers with newer 2008 R2 sp1. Now all my Windows 7 clients get:

A revocation check could not be performed for the certificate.

The certificate or associated chain is invalid (Code: 0x10000).

The Thawte certificate chain resolves on the gateway server and the RDS host servers, but not for internal or external Windows 7 clients. XP is fine. Something like this happened before with KB 2203302. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2203302

The only noticeable difference in the RDS host servers is that connection type went from RDP 6.1 to 7.1.

If I add the Thawte SSL CA certificates to the Intermediate Certificate Authorities on the clients then it works fine. I know I could do this internally, but it's the external clients that are my real concern.

Is this a bug or what is it that I need to do? Any help is appreciated.

Users losing connection - Appears to show Desktop Window Manager - Event ID 9009

Hello all,

I have numerous users complaining that they are constantly being booted from their Remote application.  We have an in house program that we had some issues with and the resolution was to force the Aero theme on the users.  With this now we have a lot of users complaining about being booted from their connection and will have to restart the session from scratch.  Any idea what can be doing this?

Hi,

We have a SBS2011 server and a 2003 R2 Terminal server.

Users in different countries need to log on to the server and use an accounting application which requires the users local regional settings.

What is the best way to "map" the local users regional settings into their Terminal server session.

Thanks

Gap between parent partition's 3DMark11 benchmark and VM's 3DMark11 benchmark

$

Hello,

I am noticing a large difference between the benchmark result for a VM hosted on Hyper-V (Windows Server 2012 Datacenter Edition, build 9200) and the benchmark result for the parent partition.

The VM referred to in the subject has the following specs:

1. 4 CPUs

2. 4GB RAM

3. RemoteFX Display Adapter

4. Windows 8 Enterprise Edition build 9200

The host has the following specs:

1. Intel Xeon 6-core CPU

2. 48GB RAM

3. Nvidia GeForce GTX560 Ti

4. Windows Server 2012 Datacenter Edition, build 9200

The results are:

VM

(a) Graphics score:3856

(b) Physics score:3414

(c) Combined score:2084

(d) 3DMarks score:3491

Parent partition

(a) Graphics score:4300

(b) Physics score:6612

(c) Combined score:4330

(d) 3DMarks score:4541

Would anyone care to suggest where the bottleneck in the performance of the VM lies?

Thank-you!

Problems with RDP/RDC from Mac OSX to Windows Server 2008 on External IP

We have a customer that is using Mac and Microsoft's RDC for Mac to their servers.

They've just upgraded from Windows Server 2003 to 2008 and can't connect through RDP to their TS server on external IP.
Their servers is not in any domain and it work for them to connect to another Windows Server 2008 that is located in their office when they use internal IP.

The problem is that when using RDC to the external IP they get bellow:

"Remote Desktop cannot verify the identity of the computer you want to connect to. This problem can occur if:

  1. The remote computer is running a version of Windows that is earlier than Windows Vista.
  2. The remote computer is configured to support only the RDP security layer.

Contact your network administrator or the owner of the remote computer for assistance."

From here they can choose "Connect" as they did on the Server 2003 but now they get: "Remote Desktop Connection cannot verify the identity of the computer that you want to connect to.Try reconnecting to the Windows-based computer, or contact our administrator." and is only able to choose "Ok".

I've changed the settings on the "configuration for host server for remote desktop sessions" under General from "RDP-Security Layer" to "Negotiate" and in this case I get a logon windows where i type in all my information click logon. Here I get another error message which says something like: (We get it in Swedish). "Connection to the windows-based computer broke since there was a problem associated with the licensificationprotocol... Try to connect again" Where I can choose "Cansel" or "reconect" but it just keeps poping up if i chose reconnect.

I've tried all settings in the TS server and there is not much to change on the RDP client. We have installed the server certificate on the Mac client but it didn't help.
We've also tried with CoRD and it works fine as RDP from a normal Windows based computer.

The only solution I've found on google is to use CoRD instead but we got problems with that connection since it keep crasching on our computer.

In my eyes the problem is on the security requirements that the RDC for Mac needs but I can't find any inforamtion on MS sites about it.

Greatfull for all tips and trix!

Configure Connection Broker to use Round Robin

$

We have an issue at the moment whereby a single server in the farm will get itself into a state where it wont complete logons (we are investigating this seperatly).  Because the failed server stops logging on new users it quickly becomes the least loaded server in the farm and soon all new server requests are sent to the failed server (called black hole from my Citrix days).

At the moment we have to put the failed server in drain mode - but this is not before lost of users have been impacted.

My question is if you can configure the connection broker to round robin connections rather than based on load?  this would prevent all new user connectsion being passed to the failed server...

Windows Server 2012 Session Host missing User Shadowing feature

$

I have just been helping a client to setup a pilot RDS system using Windows Server 2012 with 2 x Session Hosts.

One of the first thing the client asked was how they can connect to user sessions and "shadow" them for support/troubleshooting as they currently do on their 2008 R2 Session Hosts.

On further investigation it seems that the feature has been removed from 2012 for some reason and there doesn't appear to be any obvious workrounds or solutions.

Can someone please let me know if there is a way to provide this functionality, as without it this client (any many others) will not be implementing 2012 Session Hosts.

Cheers for now

Russell

Where can I find a a reference (detailed explanation) regarding RemoteFX performance monitor counters?

$

I'm looking for a reference that deals with RemoteFX performance monitor counters (both host- and VM-side).

The best I've found to date is http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff817578%28v=ws.10%29.aspx but this lacks the detail to lead you towards deeper analysis of resource consumption.

Would anyone happen to know of such a reference and care to mention it?

Cheers,

Etienne

RDP Client problems

Client RDP Session EventVwr

These errors I get when I log in.

Displayed from up -> down (7-1)

7. The Desktop Window Manager has exited with code (0x40010004)

6. Windows detected your registry file is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded now. The applications or services that hold your registry file may not function properly afterwards.

5. Certificate Services Client has been started successfully.

4. The winlogon notification subscriber <TermSrv> is taking long time to handle the notification event (Logon).

3. The winlogon notification subscriber <TermSrv> took 120 second(s) to handle the notification event (Logon).

2. Windows license validated.

1.The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because a composited theme is not in use

The problem.

My profile freezes when I logon to the terminal server. It seems to hang on “local session manager” when I look at the services on the server of my user is see that Taskeng.exe and TSTheme.exe are loaded but nothing happens further. When I kill those processes my user logs on almost directly. I need to log off every time to logon again later, I cant just close the rdp session because when I want to log back in its given all sort of errors. (The two computers cant logon right now etc. etc. etc.)

The problem seems to be even worse when I log in through a ThinClient. (Fully updated)

I have searched all over the web, but nothing really similar to my problem.

Things i tried:
  • Logged in localy changed the "Theme" from modified to classic and logged off. When i logged back in the Theme was changed to modified again.
  • RDP Security layer from Negotiate to RDP security layer (Still same errors, changed back)
  • Gave the user "Administrator" rights (Still same errors, changed back)

I think it hasn't to do anything with the network because the problem only exist with this user.

This is one of the errors the server gets in eventvwr:

We had a problem that 1 of our users couldn't connect to her RDP session anymore and she kept getting random disconnections. We "fixed" this with creating a new account and deleting the old account. She got the random disconnections following rdp protocol errors.

After that "fix" we started getting the following error when users try to login their account using Remote Desktop Connection:

" you are connected to the remote computer. However, an error occured while an initial user program was starting, so you are being logged off. "

Even our own admin account is getting this problem, when i check the Event Viewer it gives the following warning:

" Windows detected your registry file is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded now. The applications or services that hold your registry file may not function properly afterwards.

Install TSCAL (Windows 2003) with RDSCAL (Windows 2008)

$

Hi

We have a Windows 2003 server that's recently needed re-installing. Unfortunately no backup of the original TSCALs was made.

We've been unable to buy any replacement TSCAL licenses but was informed by a supplier that it's possible to install the TSCALs using RDSCALs for Windows 2008. Now, we purchased a 5 user 2008 CAL pack but when I try and install the license is alerted as invalid.

Could someone tell me if it is fact possible to install Terminal Services CALs using a Remote Desktop Win2008 CAL?

If not, does anyone know how I can get hold of these old Win 2003 TS CALs, they appear to be like gold dust at the moment.

Thanks for any advice.

Carl

Blank screen after logon, but not immediately after restart.

We use RDP to access a Win 2003 server.  Starting around 15:50 EDT yesterday I was told users of this service were kicked off the server.  Logging in would get the following error "Application Error:  This Application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000044), screen shot: http://imgur.com/963tT.  Click on OK to terminate the application.  You have to click four or five times (I'm assuming individual errors) to get the message(s) to go away.  This leaves you with a blank desktop.

Using CTRL+Alt+End allows me to bring up the task manager.  At this point I can manually start explorer.exe.  The session remains fine if I disconnect, but it goes back to the errors if you log off.

Setting RDC on the client's end to open explorer on logon does not work.  Attempting to set the terminal service to override the client and start any program (explorer, notepad, etc.) on logon causes the service to automatically log off right after you click through the errors.  Using C+A+End before you click through the errors to start explorer manually prevents the log off.

Restarting the server temporarily fixes the problem.  I haven't nailed down anything consistent yet as I was disconnecting instead of logging off.  I know it hasn't made it twelve hours straight.  I suspect the last restart only worked for three hours.  Also, running in manually-activated-explorer mode induces a several second delay in normally instant actions.

Due to how the server is setup, a local user needs to enter a few key pushes while it is booting up.  So I am unable to simply restart the server remotely.

"Because of an error in data encryption" I get disconnect RDC

Hi,

I am connecting to Server 2008 via RDC from Vista Ultimate. I just finished a new install and since then I am getting very intermittently the above fault.

I never had this before, and this is at least 3 month now.

Any glues, I checked the registry, as per previous problems, but no luck.

Thanks

Asking Password in order to run the Application in RemoteApp

Hi ,

we need a  small help / information as we have have installed the Remote App Services  and everything works fine with it , once issue I am facing is whenever I click on any application which is published by RemoteApp manager it ask for the User id and password , but whereas in another environment all the sever & service pack same it does not.

Since we are planning and expecting it should work like single sing on and take the windows authentication from the pages and allow the remoteapp  to work  without further authentication , as the IIS is configured for Windows Authentication is enable there for the Application, also we have created a domain SSL Certification which is been used to authenticate the client.

Kindly suggest some pointer so that we can resolve the issue if you have faced similar in any of the implementation.

With regards
