W2k8 terminal server start menu search

$

I have a w2k8 r2 terminal server with xnapp 6.5 installed. From the start menu and in the search box, i cannot browse network shares. whenever i try and enumerate a known remote pc share, windows just returns me an option window containing the following icons "libraries", "Computer" and "Internet"...

I believe this is causing one of my network apps a problem.

I can't see any AD group policy that would be preventing admin users from searching.

The windows search service is enabled as a role and is active.

Anyone come across this before?

Install Remote Desktop Services Failed on Windows 2012 Server

I understand RDS is not recommended on DC due to security consideration.  However since I want to play it at home, it is not much a concern.  Such scenario works fine on Windows 2008 R2.  But on Windows 2012, the RDS (session-based, have not tried VDI, but expect same result) installation always fails and is incomplete on DC.

In \Administrative Tools\Terminal Services, I only have RD Licensing Diagnoser and RD licensing manager.  The remote desktop service management service cannot be started (Error code: 0x88250001).  Is there any extra configuration needed for RDS working on Server 2012 DC or before the installation?  Thanks.

I am running Windows 7 Pro on my notebook. I am wanting to connect remotely to my WHS at my home. The message I get when I try to connect is: "This Web site needs to run the following add-on: Remote Desktop Services ActiveX Client." I enabled the Remote Desktop Services ActiveX controls as directed under Internet Tools. I still keep getting the error. Any ideas?

I have install Office 2010 and Remoteapp Program on One of windows 2012 server. I can open the word from rdweb without problem. However, I have these questions.

  • Whenever I open thhps://win2012/rdweb and click Word to open it, it keep asking for username and password. Since I am in a domain computer, can we integrate centennials with AD like Outlook without entering password?
  • How can I create rdp file and distribute it to users?

I have build a domain with CA.

When I use the computers not belongs to the domain to connect the remote desktop of computers in the domain,

it always give the error "The publisher of this remote connection cannot be identified".

from the dialog, i can found the cert's publisher is the target compute.

So I make a group policy following the guid  Configuring Remote Desktop certificates

After that , I import the cert published by the domain and add it to the trust cert store.

Next when i access the remote computer, it give the same error "The publisher of this remote connection cannot be identified"

but the cert is correct  and publisher is my domain controller, which as following:

A more strange thing is when i try to install this cert, it give the following warning:

it means the publisher is empty , I think this is the source of warning.

but the publisher is my domain as the my first picture, So what's problem ?   Please do me a fovar!

Thank you very much!

RDS Server 2012 Problem - Cannot Remove Previously Assigned VDI desktops and RemoteApps from Users.

$

Scenario:

Users assigned 3-4 RemoteApps and a Pooled Desktop during pilot phase.  Connection Broker and RDWEB Server remain the same during production rollout. The test Session and Virtual Desktop Collections were removed, and new ones created.

Accessing either the RDweb page through a browser or via the Start Screen Remote Desktop App, users who participated in both the pilot and production phases are presented with both the new working remoteapps and desktops, as well as their former assigned ones.  The old ones do not actually work, giving an instant "can't connect" error, but because many of the assigned apps are the same as those used in production, the resulting duplicate tiles / icons are problematic to say the least.

How does one clear these from the users' RDS assignments?

RDS in Windows Server 2012

Hello,

I have a couple of questions surrounding Remote Desktop Services in Windows Server 2012 that I hope can be answered.

First question: I understand that RD Web Access no longer requires an activex control to be installed. If that's correct, does this open up RemoteApp functionality to other browsers and other operating systems?

Second question: I already have an RDS environment built on Windows Server 2008 R2, is it possible for me to keep my session hosts, licensing server, and connection broker but replace my gateway and web access servers with the Windows Server 2012 version?

Remote Desktop Session Host server hangs/locks up (2008 R2 in vSphere 4.1)

I have a Server 2008 R2 Enterprise system acting as a RDSH server in a vSphere 4.1 Advanced cluster environment.  This server experiences intermittent lock-ups during business hours.  I am posting in the RDS (TS) forum because I believe the problem relates specifically to it being an RDSH server.  The problem has occurred at inconsistent intervals, with about 30 instances over the last six months.  It consistently occurs during use by end-users.

More info about the environment:

  • 2008 R2 domain running all R2 DCs at 2008 domain and forest level
  • HP ProLiant DL360 G7 hardware running ESXi 4.1 in vSphere 4.1 Advanced cluster
  • HP StorageWorks P2000 G3 SAN utilizing 10K and 15K SAS 6.0gbps DP drives over Brocade FC switches
  • Almost entirely HP printers installed on server, with a couple of others.  Most printers are HP LaserJet 2420s using PCL5 and PCL6 drivers.
  • Clients are mixed between XP, Vista, 7 and thin clients based on CE, HP ThinPro (Linux), and WES 2009.  All desktops fully patched.
  • The server runs Office 2007, Chrome (multi-user install),  Firefox, IE9, a proprietary LoB application, AVG Antivirus 2012, ShadowProtect, Adobe Reader, Flash, Java, Sonicwall Terminal Services Agent, and uses Desktop Experience to provide a full Aero environment where possible.
  • When the system locks up, all network communication and VMWare Tools heartbeats cease.  On the vSphere console, we are able to issue Ctrl + Alt + Del at the login prompt, which causes the "Press Ctrl + Alt Del" message to go away, as if it is about to prompt for username and password, but it never does.
  • Device redirection is disabled
  • The server has four vCPUs and 12GB of RAM assigned to it; it has had between 20 and 50 concurrent users at the time of the crashes

Looking at Event Viewer, there is no one, consistent set of events in any logs that can be correlated to the crash.  However, there are several events that can be tied to different crashes.

Set1:

WinLogon 6005

The winlogon notification subscriber <Sens> is taking long time to handle the notification event (Disconnect).

After much research, we've been led to believe the issue might be caused by problems with HP printers.  This HP thread is relevant:

http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/Print-Servers-Network-Storage/64-Bit-HP-BiDi-Channel-Components-Installer/td-p/1085299

However, we were able to resolve BiDi component issues.  Currently, we still get 602, and I noticed there were some driver problems on some of the printers (wrong driver).  I also read an anecdotal report that reverting to PCL 5 can help:

http://forums.citrix.com/thread.jspa?threadID=261933&start=15&tstart=0

I have not yet done this driver change.  I did apply the hotfix found in KB2457866

VMware Tools, Windows, and the HP hardware have been updated recently.  All software except the custom LoB app is in use at our other clients on 2008 R2 servers in vSphere, and we do not have this problem anywhere else.  This environment has nine other 2008 R2 Standard and Enterprise systems running on the vSphere cluster without issues.  The printers are served from a domain controller that does not experience issues.

While I intend to apply some printer driver updates and revert to PCL5, I am posting this in the hopes someone can give us another direction.  I am not 100% convinced this is caused by printer issues, since I cannot always correlate printing to the crashes.  I have reviewed several different Technet, Citrix, and HP forum threads with some similarities in symptoms, but none are quite the same.  At this point the print drivers and custom LoB software are the primary suspects, but I'm open to more lines of troubleshooting.

Edit: another symptom to note is that when the hang does occur, vSphere shows CPU, RAM, and disk utilization skyrocket, then drop to nothing as the system locks up and Tools stops receiving information.  The host seems to have plenty of resources, and I'm not inclined to believe the server is under-spec'ed.  The same user applications ran in 2003 terminal services on a single-vCPU, 4GB system with weaker disks.

Setup Microsoft VDI on existing hyper-v hosts

Hi, I am looking to implement a Microsoft VDI as a trial for few users (10).

We have 4 hyper-v hosts (Server 2008 R2 core) setup as failover cluster. Our active directory domain consists of 3 domain controllers (2 x Server 2008 R2 and 1 x Server 2003). 1 x Server 2008 R2 DC is physical machine whereas rest are virtual machines.

First of all I don’t know where to start from. I have my existing hyper-v hosts with enough memory and storage.

I am following the videos here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/video/microsoft-vdi-part-i-server-side-configuration and I have few questions if someone can assist me please, I will be very grateful.

Can I install RD Connection Broker, RD Gateway, RD Session Host, and RD Web Access in single VM (Server 2008 R2)?

Do I install this "RD Virtualization Host" role on all of my 4 hyper-v hosts?

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

Autodesk 2011/2012 Direct3D issue with RemoteFX (RDVH)

I don't know if anyone has tested RemoteFX with Autodesk software.  For Autocad, I can not turn on 3D hardware acceleration (Direct3D).  The problem is that Autocad does not see "Microsoft RemoteFX graphics device WDDM" installed on VM.  Therefore it is using software mode which is much slower and consume more CPU.   Revit 2012 hardware acceleration (Direct3D) mode does not work.  Some of the material mappings were missing and rotating 3D model really messed up.   3dsMax Design 2012 hardware acceleration has performance issue too.  Rotating large 3d model is barely reponsive and quite choppy.   It's a total failure for Autodesk products with hardware acceleration.   The only app that seems to be working is Google Earth with DirectX.  Although it's nice to have full aero and smooth playback of multimedia, CAD software with hardware acceleration through vGPU is our primary focus.  RemoteFX has failed us if Autodesk products can't use this technology.  Does anyone have any success with 3D acceleration on Autodesk products with RemoteFX?

How to assign and revoke folder privileges using RDWeb Remote Apps?

Hi Everyone,

I would like to provide our Admins (all use RDWeb - Remote Apps) the ability to change folder right for users using an RDWeb Remote app. I have the following questions:

1- Is there such a built-in utility that I can use?

2- How can I build an app like this? Do I need ActiveX and VB Scripting? ***I can't use a DOS shell because cmd is totally disabled for RDWeb due to security reasons.

Thanks,

Rebuilding Terminal Server with the same name

Hi All,

Our VM running TS on Server 2008 R2 crashed. We need to rebuild a new VM to run TS. Is it possible to remove the old server from the AD and build the new server with the same name? Or will there be any AD objects which will prevent us using the same name? We are going to obtain a Client License Key Pack as described in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953918.

Thanks for your time and feedback

Windows XP SP3 RDC 6.1x having trouble accessing RemoteApps

Hi Everyone,

I have a Windos XP SP3 with RDC 6.1x that has trouble connecting to RemoteApps. It works for logging into RDWeb but then when I click RemoteApp program it just asks the password over and over. I tested this on a Vista and Windows 7 and the password is just fine. So, it's not a password issue. I also updated RDC to latest version to no avail. Could this be a an IE version issue?

Can anyone please test Windows XP with RemoteApps?

Is there a specific version of Windows XP that support RemoteApps?

Thanks

RemoteFX performance using dual Tesla 2070Q via Dell c410x + Dell c1100

$

We have the following setup for our RemoteFX prototype:

Server: DELL C1100

Processor: Intel Xeon X5650 @ 2.67 Ghz ( VT-d and VT-x enabled on BIOS )

RAM: 48 GB ECC DDR3 @ 1333 Mhz ( 6 x 8GB Modules - tri-channel configuration )

Primary Storage: 6 x 300 GB Seagate 10k RPM ( RAID 10 )

GPU Enclosure: DELL C410X

GPU(s): 2 x Nvidia Tesla M2070Q 6GB

As you can see our setup is a decent setup but we aren't getting the performance we were hoping for.

We have users that use AutoCad (Revit, Civil3d, etc) and also SektchUp(openGL only).  We were hoping using RemoteFX was going to give us the ability to virtual their desktops but it seems not viable from the results we are getting.

When the mouse hits a 3D environment such as the drawing pane of AutoCad we get lots of mouse lag.  We also do not get the framerate we would expect in 3d games such as Battlefield, World of Warcraft and Starcraft II.  The mouse in the first two games mentioned also is "weird" as it jumps around making the games unplayable.

Aero mode works, it seems RemoteFX is running but it doesnt seem its utilizing the beefy video cards.

We ran some tests with 3D mark and the video card memory showed only 71mb  (Im guessing its forcing only 71mb because thats what it needs for one monitor?)

The results for the 3dmark were horrible:

3DMark Score: 2244 3DMarks

SM2.0 Score: 612

HDR/SM3.0 Score: 1010

CPU Score: 2286

GT1 - Return To Proxycon: 6 FPS

GT2 - Firefly Forest: 3 FPS

HDR1 - Canyon Flight: 7 FPS

http://3dmark.com/3dm06/15863976

I think I can get the above 3DMark score with a Tandy 1000

The Desktop experience is better than a standard RDP but I was really hoping we could throw the beefy video cards at the server to get our 3D modeling folks onboard VDI,

My thoughts were this setup would be much better than a standard PC with a $150 GPU but im not feeling it is.  What can we test to make sure everything is running like its suppose to?  Has anyone tried doing a similar setup for AutoCAD/Sketchup?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Windows Serve 2012 RemoteFX and CPU-based graphics accelerator

I'm evaluating the RTM version of Windows Server 2012 and have installed the Hyper-V and Virtualisation Host roles.

I've created a Windows 7 and Windows 8 VM on the Server and have read that RemoteFX in 2012 provides a "CPU-based graphics accelerator" but can't see how to enable this feature?

The full text of the article is on this page VDI if you expand the RemoteFX summary.

Cheers for now

One-time Authentication

Hi,

I'm using RDWeb and RemoteApp on Windows Server 2008 R2. I've setup everything and its all working great! I'd just like to save my users a job (some of them are still struggling to remember their password so I don't want things too complicated for the end-user). When I go onto https://remote.domain.com/RDWeb the user is instructed to login. Once logged in, they get a list of RemoteApps they can connect to - when clicking the app you are once again required to enter your username and password. Whilst this is hassle, to add more confusion to the mix the users also have the enter domain\ and as they are not used to doing this, its likely that most of them will forget to do it then we'll be bombarded with emails saying "Remote Desktop isn't working!"

So we'd like to have the login details from the /RDWeb page to be carried across so that the user doesn't have to re-authenticate themselves. If this isn't possible, is there a "Remember my credentials" box that can be enabled so the user will only have to authenticate themselves once on that computer.

Our end users will be using Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 (and the odd few Windows 8).

Any advice is appreciated! ThanksImage available at: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/getfile/182065

How can I direct my Terminal Server users to print to a second dedicated Windows2003 Print Server.

We would like to use a dedicated Window 2003 Server (Print Server Role) ( call it PS01) and not put printers on our Terminal Servers ( call them TS01 &  TS02 ).  We run a login script that maps a few drives for our remote users and I am wondering if I can add something like "net print" to direct print requests.
