Cannot print to local USB-connected printer when using Remote Desktop to connect 2008 R2 server
need to re-enter credentials on reconnect after sleep
I'm using a laptop with windows7 to connect to a windows7 instance on a vmware server.
I saved the credentials for the rdp session, and clicking the shortcut opens the remote session without a problem without asking for username/password. Now when I put the laptop to sleep and resume it at a later time the remote desktop client tries to reconnect, but when the connection finally comes back the remote system will always ask for my password. If I cancel the reconnect and restart the rdp session by clicking the shortcut again I get in without any problem.
Why does rdp not automatically recoonnect without asking for a password?

rdp's NLA and Smartcard logon
Hi all,
I've got very strange problem with NLA. My setup is rdp connection Win7(client, non domain)->Win7(server, domain member).
NLA on server side is on. It works with password authentication. When I try to authenticate with smart card I got an error - "The remote computer that you are trying to connect to requires Network Level Authentication (NLA), but your Windows domain controller cannot be contacted to perform NLA."
Then I put away NLA and then the authentication by smart card is working ok.
The words about the domain controller are very strange, because the Win7-server can find it when with passwords.
Any ideas ?

Looking for TS Teleport Sample for Programming Virtual Channels in Terminal Services.
Hi,
I was hoping to find an online sample that demonstrates how to program dynamic virtual channels in Terminal Services. I found this page:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2007/09/19/ts-teleport-sample-instructions.aspx
which has a link to a ts-teleport sample:
http://tsteam.members.winisp.net/TsTeleport.zip
However that file is not there anymore. I've tried e-mailing the Remote Desktop team about the file but have not had any reply yet.
Does anyone know where I can find the above sample file?
Thanks!

Terminal Services Issue - Disconnecting some users, freezes and no login
Hello,
We are currently having an issue with our Citrix Farm (Server 2003, XenApp 5) which I believe is Terminal Services related.
At random intervals a server will seemingly lock up. It will disconnect some users and freeze others. When this happens I am unable to login via RDP, or at the console using the Domain Admin account. The screen is completely grey. The RDP session doesn't disconnect or time out, it just simply sits there being grey. I can login at the console using the local admin account but after approx. 5 minutes it is completely locked up. I can access the servers shares (c$ e.t.c.) fine. I can view and control running services via service.msc on a remote computer, I can view the event logs, and use perfmon to view information on it.
Yesterday when one server locked up I disconnected the network cables, left it disconnected for 5 minutes, then reconnected them and I was then able to RDP and login fine, I then rebooted the server and it came up working fine. It happens to probably 1 in 4 servers every day. Never outside of Office Hours.
Your help would be much appreciated.
Remote Desktop Services Server 2008 R2 - Group Policy Not Setting Default Printer Correctly
Hi there. My boss wants me to move away from Citrix and use RDS instead and so far, everything seems ok apart from setting users printers via group policy. In our Citrix environment, session printers are assigned using the advanced config console, of these printers, you can also set one as default. I have tried to emulate this in RDS and have gotten as far as the printers showing up in the users RDS session, but it seems to default to a random printer as opposed to the one i have set in Group Policy. I am running RDS on Server 2008 R2 with latest patches. I have one connection broker and so far, one RDS server. I am accessing the RDS session using a HP thin client with XP Embedded on it and using the RDP client. I have tried unticking the printers tick box on the RDS client, still sets a random printer as default. Is there anything anyone can suggest to fix this? Thanks, Berks01

Best practice: Terminal Services high availability solution
Hi TS Great Minds!
I am planning to deploy Terminal Services and one of the major goals is to provide high availability for remote access to applications.
What do I have for the deployment:
1) Two physical servers of the same hardware
2) Two Windows Server 2008R2 Enterprise Editions
3) Required number of CALs, of course.
My idea is to deploy at least two farm members with TS RemoteApp on the separate physical machines. In addition to them, I am going to deploy another two (or one) virtual machine with TS Gateway role onboard. For the virtualization I am going to deploy the Hyper-V role on both of the physical machines.
Actually, there are two questions:
1) What is the best practice in arranging TS roles(TS Gateway, TS Session Broker, TS Web Access, TS RemoteApp, TS Licensing)? Which of the roles is recommended to put together on the same machine (virtual, in my case)?
2) What is the best practice to provide high availability for the solution? Should I create a Failover Cluster or NLB for two TS Gateways will be enough (in case I deploy two TS Remote App farm members on the separate physical machines)?
Each of the physical machine have enough performance to support the full workload from the planned number of client connections.
Sorry for the complicated description of my issue (I am a bit limited in English), but I do believe the TS Great Minds will understand the point of my inquiry.
Looking forward to get an advice from you!
Thank you in advance!
How can I direct my Terminal Server users to print to a second dedicated Windows2003 Print Server.
We would like to use a dedicated Window 2003 Server (Print Server Role) ( call it PS01) and not put printers on our Terminal Servers ( call them TS01 & TS02 ). We run a login script that maps a few drives for our remote users and I am wondering
if I can add something like "net print" to direct print requests.
Application popup open behind main application
Environment: Windows 2008 R2 / XenApp 6.5 / Office 2010 (all updates).
We have an application that hooks into MS Word for generating documents. It's also using the spell checker from Word 2010. 9 out of 10 times when you generate a document, or use the spell checker there's no issue, the spell checker window pops up on the foreground or the document is generated on the foreground like it should.
However, sometimes the spell checker or the document open in the background of the main application and the user can't see it. If the user then tries to click on the main application the following message appears:
'This action cannot be completed because the other application is busy. Choose 'switch to' to activate the busy application and correct the problem'.
Clicking on switch to doesn't work, the message just pops up again and the only way you can switch to the background application is by using alt-tab.
I already tried setting the foregroundlocktimeout to 0 but this doesn't help.
So my question is, how can I force background popups and windows to always open in the foreground? Is this something the manufacture of our application has to fix? Or is this a Windows 2008 issue?
FYI: We don't have this problem with Windows 2003 R2 at all.
Thanks in advance!
IE9 on user accounts fail - Suspect Java
I have a remote desktop server 2008 r2 for 70 client machines. I have 400 users that use IE9 on the Thin Clients, all between the grades k-5th.
When a first grader logs into the TC and opens IE9, it hangs for long periods of time. It also fails to open a Java link. Logging in as an Administrator, I have no such problem with IE9.
What I've tried.
- Reinstalling Java 7 (several time). Java works fir with Chrome, and from the cmd line java -ver shows it's version.
- Deleting Profile and rebuilding profile. All new rebuilt profiles do not have c:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\ folder.
- IE9 reset settings. (doesn't help)
- Given modify permissions to Everyone on the C:\Program Files (x86)\Java folder
- Replaced c:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\ with a known working from from the Administrator (modified correct path in deployment.properties)
I'm certainly at a loss and very much open to any suggestions.
((Note: I've viewed several other IE9/Java issues across Google and in these forums before I posted.)))
Migrating user profiles from Server 2008 to a new Server 2008 R2 server
Hi there, hoping someone can assist me with this.
We're moving both our Terminal Servers to new Servers for 64bit functionality. We're going from 2008 to 2008R2. I copied the user profiles from the old server to the new with a robocopy command and it ran successfully. All permissions and data went to the new servers.
My problem comes in when a user logs in: instead of utilizing the user profile folder 'John.Smith', a new profile 'John.Smith.DOMAIN' is being created & used, and thus the users have no access to data (I'm still in the testing phase so its not live yet). How can I force the Server to make use of the migrated profile folders instead of creating new ones? I don't particularly want to use Roaming Profiles due to the current TS being used.
Assistance in any way around this problem would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Microsoft VDI solution deployed using Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. Right now my virtual desktops are working on my Thin Clients. However, when i plug in a USB drive in the Thin Client, the virtual desktop session does not recognize it.
How can I enable this????
Note: I don't have RemoteFX configured, do I need this?

Asking Password in order to run the Application in RemoteApp
Hi ,
we need a small help / information as we have have installed the Remote App Services and everything works fine with it , once issue I am facing is whenever I click on any application which is published by RemoteApp manager it ask for the User id and password , but whereas in another environment all the sever & service pack same it does not.
Since we are planning and expecting it should work like single sing on and take the windows authentication from the pages and allow the remoteapp to work without further authentication , as the IIS is configured for Windows Authentication is enable there for the Application, also we have created a domain SSL Certification which is been used to authenticate the client.
Kindly suggest some pointer so that we can resolve the issue if you have faced similar in any of the implementation.

RDS Server 2012 Problem - Cannot Remove Previously Assigned VDI desktops and RemoteApps from Users.
Scenario:
Users assigned 3-4 RemoteApps and a Pooled Desktop during pilot phase. Connection Broker and RDWEB Server remain the same during production rollout. The test Session and Virtual Desktop Collections were removed, and new ones created.
Accessing either the RDweb page through a browser or via the Start Screen Remote Desktop App, users who participated in both the pilot and production phases are presented with both the new working remoteapps and desktops, as well as their former assigned ones. The old ones do not actually work, giving an instant "can't connect" error, but because many of the assigned apps are the same as those used in production, the resulting duplicate tiles / icons are problematic to say the least.
How does one clear these from the users' RDS assignments?

Windows Server 2012 Virtual Desktop Template Issue
Hi
I have created a two server VDI infrastructure using Server 2012 RTM I have one server hosting the RDS connection broker and RD Web Access roles and then a separate server with Hyper-V server installed hosting the server 2012 RD Virtualisation Host. I am hosting Windows 8 VDI images on these servers
When I create the virtual infrastructure from scratch I can created a new collection hosting pooled desktops and everything works no problem. The issue arises when I need to update the template and re-create all the desktops. For updating the desktops I am following the process below.
1- Make a copy of the existing desktop and then start it up in hyper-v and make my changes
2- Run sysprep with the /generalise /oobe /shutdown /mode:VM
3- Go into my Collection on my connection broker server and run the recreate all desktops task
4- Select my shutdown VM syspreped in step 2
At this stage I get an error stating "The virtual desktop must be in a stopped state: Could not identify the state of the virtual desktop. Ensure that the RD virtualisation host server is available on the network and the virtual desktop is shut down"
I have looked all over for errors in the logs and found nothing. It look connection related or maybe something to do with WMI but I have run connection test between the servers and everything is ok. The only solution I have found so far is if I remove the RD virtualisation host from my hyper-v server and then reboot and reinstall it then works again.
Can anybody help as I am running out of ideas on this one.
Thanks

W03 TS CALS and RDS licenses
I have a 2003 Server SE SPK2. I am new to his environment, and I see that we have 25-30 people logging in using remote desktop and using Office 2003 in the TS.
However, I don't see a license sever installed or active, nor any CALS installed. I need to upgrade the office suite to 2010 on this server, as I will be deploying Office 2010 to all the desktops. Shouldn’t I have CALS and RDS licenses for each connection?
