espero y me puedan ayudar.

RD Session Host lock down best practice document

Hello,

I am currently working on deploying an RDS Farm. My farm has several RD Session host servers. Today I learned that you can do some bad things to the RD Session hosts, if a user presses CTRL + Alt + End when having a open session. I locked all of this down using different GPOs which include disabled access task manager, cmd, locking the server, reboot and shutdown etc.

However, this being sad how would I know what else to lock down since I am new to this topic. I tried to find some Microsoft document about best practices what should be locked down but I wasn’t successful and unfortunately a search in the forum did not bring up anything else.

With all the different features and option Windows Server 2008 R2 has I do not even know where to start.

Can some please point me into the right direction.

Thank you
Marcus

Slow login with RDWeb applications and RemoteApps

Hello,

I'm having a problem with a newly created 2008 R2 RDS Farm. Full desktop logins are fast for remote users (under 10 seconds), but RemoteApps and RDWeb apps take about 30 seconds to load (once loaded, subsequent apps load in 2-3 seconds). The details button is greyed out for about 25 seconds while waiting for the app to load and then when it is finally becomes enabled, the app loads in about 3 seconds.

The RDS setup consists of:

1 Gateway server
1 Connection Broker/License server
2 Session Host/RDWeb servers

I have tried the following:

-Unchecking "Bypass RD Gateway server for local addresses" under the session host settings in RemoteApps manager on both session host servers
-Disabling UAC on all servers (oddly enough this seemed to increase the login time)
-Disabling client device redirection

Nothing has improved the speed. Any other suggestions? Thanks

Windows Key "stuck"

Periodically, the RDP 6.0 client seems to think that the Windows key is being pressed (outside of the RDP, it is not; rebooting the host doesn't fix).  At least one other person has experienced this: MS Terminal Services blog.  As noted there, pressing the Windows key a few times fixes it for a while.  Anyone know of a real solution or if this is known by MS?

Thanks

How to disable Remote Desktop Access but allow RemoteAPPs to run?

Hi everyone,

We have RemoteApps working fine. Unfortunately, it also enables Remote Desktop Connections as well so the user who is supposed to ONLY use the RemoteApp directly from the .rdp file now can have access to full Remote Desktop. Is there a way to disable remote desktop but allow remote apps (.rdp files)?

Thanks

Server 2012: Local User Profile Disks & DFS

I've been thinking of setting up two Remote Desktop Servers, then using DFS to ensure the Local User Profile Disks are highly available.  Is this a supported or feasable scenario?

How to Implement a Simple VDI System

Folks:

I am planning to install Server 2012 on a box that will host between 6 and 9 virtual desktops.  The box also needs to run Exchange.  I am looking for guidance on how to structure this.

I am concerned about Exchange being on the same server.  I can use an older box that has SBS2011 license to run Exchange, but I understand that SBS has to be the main controller, which seems regressive to me.

I'd really like to get some feedback on the best way to set this up that will minimize hardware and software expense and adminstrative burden.

Thanks!

Micah

Help with Server 2012 RDS setup

While using Server 2008 R2 with RDS I had the following setup:-

NIC 1 - Internal - Kerberos authentication for SSO signed with domain issued cert

NIC 2 - External - RDP authentication with Internet signed cert - TMG setup to forward RDP traffic to this NIC

Even with two NICs under Server 2012 I cannot find a way to setup two incoming connections and sign each with a different cert.
Under server 2008 R2 I did not have the Gateway role installed and wish to avoid installing this role but to still achieve the same setup as I had under Server 2008 R2.

Any help is much appreciated.

remote desktop and group policy

i have a question about rdp and group policy. my client has a rdp server and i have been able to grant acces to several users.

i want to give my users acces to the rdp and have a application start. i tried it with the remote desktop session host configuration but ran into the problem that i as a administrator had no control over the server anymore unless i log on to the console. well the problem is that i am in a different city.

so i tried using the group policy i like that better because i should be able to point the gp to a specific user or group off users and still maintain control over the server myself, i tried some settings myself and could not get it to work. than i did my research and found out that i was doing the right thing group policy  Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Remote Session Environment.

well long story short it does not work even after restarting the server several times gpupdate. you name it i tried it. i am old school and am at the point where i am ready to read the manua. yeah that bad.

i have had help in the forums from several people and i hope that someone can help me out here.

thanks

KB2553323 issues with Server 2008 R2 Terminal Server

Hi All,

I thought I would share my unwanted experience on Friday morning last week when we had the following update installed on our Citrix Xenapp 5 servers which caused them to max its CPU. Vmware was complaining of High CPU and the qfarm /load was showing 10000 with only a hand full of people on this server. These servers normally can hold around 25 users without any issues, but with only 5 users and this update caused major issues. As soon as i removed this update and rebooted everything was back to normal. I am going to do more testing and also report this to Microsoft but thought I would share this first with Citrix. I am going to make sure this update is stopped from installing by WSUS.

RDWeb SSO stops working after some time. ASP.NET event code 3005

I have a lab setup with server running RD Web & RD Gateway role.  Second server running RD Broker, and two servers running RD Session Host.  All required certificate and GPO configuration has been done and Web Single-Sign-On is working.  The problem is that after some time (usually 3+ hours) Web SSO stops working.  There is no error to client it just starts prompting for credentials.  This happens to both WinXP & Win7 clients.  The only error I see is on the RD Web server.  Error details below.  This is a fresh install of all servers with latest patches.  All servers are Windows 2008 R2 SP1.  I have found that enabling recycling of the RDWeb App Pool in IIS seems to fix the issue but this is a patch and I would love to fix the root cause.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

How can I remove the "Search" from the new UI in Windows 2012 for Terminal Services users

$

HI,

I am configuring a Windows 2012 RDS Host. I have successfully locked the server down so the users can't do much more than they need.

I am really struggling with being able to remove the ability for users to use "search" to locate and then run applications.

If I login as a standard user and go to Search and choose "Apps". All the apps on the sever are presented including things like admin tools, power shell, windows backup etc. I have already prevented certain apps from being able to be run vi GPO but I want to be able to simply hide Apps from being presented from search or even just remove the whole Seach option.

I have set the following GPO's fromn a 2008r2 DC but they don;t seem to have in effect even theough  a RSOP check shows they are applied to the logged in user.

Start Menu and Taskbarhide    Policy Setting Winning GPO

Do not search for files     Enabled  TSLockdown
Do not search Internet      Enabled  TSLockdown
Do not search programs and Control Panel items   Enabled  TSLockdown

How can I remove Apps from the  "Search" part in the new UI for Windows 2012 for Terminal Services users.

Really hoping someone maybe able to shed some light on this?

Many thanks, Richard

Help with Certificates and SSO

Yes I have searched the forums on this topic but I am still confused. Here's my environment:

2x Windows 2008 SP2 session host servers

1x Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Session broker

The Farm is accessible to employees only (domain joined and disjoined computers) using the internal DNS name of TSFARM1.company.pri External employees (sales) access the farm via a VPN. The purpose is to allow users to have a full function desktop, so this is not for RemoteApp etc.

My users receive security warnings about the session broker server then again about the session host server when launching the RDP client. I would like to eliminate this. I also would like to have SSO enable to help speed the process and reduce the amount of log ins.

My questions are:

1. How do I request a CSR for my internal domain (which server is this generated from)? This way I can use it on multiple servers. I contacted Comodo and they said they can not issue a cert for the "*.company.pri" domain. On the forums I see many examples of this but they are usually for .com domains.

2. How do I then apply this to SSO. Just to have my expectation set. SSO means that I can create a rdp file that connects to the farm and not provide credentials on the rdp file. This will pass the logged in credentials of the computer to the farm correct? How will this behave with my non domain joined computers?

Thanks,

RemoteApp on Start Menu & GPO

Hi,

I found a few article but none that really answers my question if there's a GPO setting to automatically deliver the Connection URL for the users. Found nothing in the Deploying RemoteApp Programs to the Start Menu by Using RemoteApp and Desktop Connection Step-by-Step Guide.doc either.

The setting I'm talking about is in the image below.

Thoughts?

Windows Server 2012 Session Host missing User Shadowing feature

$

I have just been helping a client to setup a pilot RDS system using Windows Server 2012 with 2 x Session Hosts.

One of the first thing the client asked was how they can connect to user sessions and "shadow" them for support/troubleshooting as they currently do on their 2008 R2 Session Hosts.

On further investigation it seems that the feature has been removed from 2012 for some reason and there doesn't appear to be any obvious workrounds or solutions.

Can someone please let me know if there is a way to provide this functionality, as without it this client (any many others) will not be implementing 2012 Session Hosts.

Cheers for now

Custom Wave Driver and RDP

$

My company is looking to implement a product called ARC Premium by ARC Solutions that integrates with Cisco CUCM. It's an attendant operator console alternative to Cisco Unified Attendant Console.

The VAR is telling me, and ARC documentation says as well, that RDP to the ARC servers is not supported. They reference a problem RDP causes with the custom wave driver that's required.

- Microsoft has an article discussing this issue here; http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928046#appliesto

- Cisco also has a Field Notice discussing the issue including work arounds; http://www.cisco.com/en/US/ts/fn/630/fn63030.html

My problem is both of these articles reference this issue in Server 2003. ARC Premium 5.1.4 is supported on Windows Server 2008 R1 32bit, which is the platform I intend to deploy it on.

Both the referenced articles indicate the issue is easily worked around in Server 2003. They make no mention of it existing in Server 2008. Yet the vendor still says they won't support RDP.

So my question is; Is anyone aware of custom wave driver issues in Server 2008 R1? Or specifically issues with ARC Solutions or CUCM?

When pressed, a VAR engineer gave anecdotal evidence that this is still an issue.

Terminal Server 2003 - Error 7054

I am getting error 7054 (The system has reached its licensed logon limit) when i try to remote control a user.  I have tried the following:

-License Logging Service is Stopped and Disabled.

-Rebooted (a lot).

-CALs for terminal server 2003 are installed and fine.

-license server can be reached no problem.  this is a newly deployed license server.

-server is Licensed for "Per User or Per Device".

-CALs are "Per User".

-uninstall and reinstall TS Role.

I have looked all over the web and found that basically, these are the possible fixes and none have worked.  The server is a clean install (i am having another unrelated yet worse problem on my old TS...I have to reboot it every 24 hours otherwise no one can get in).  I know its a Server 2003 licensing problem but I have no clue where to look.

Thanks

virtual desktop pools: possible bug

$

I worked through a problem this morning where I could not add a virtual machine to a pool. The virtual machine did not appear as a member of any virtual desktop pool, nor did it appear in the list of available virtual machines to add a pool. I was eventually able to have it appear in the list.

steps to reproduce:

1. configure environment with at least 2 virtual host servers in a failover cluster configuration, 1 server acting as a remote desktop services connection broker, and one virtual machine.

2. Create a virtual desktop pool on the connection broker server's remote desktop services connection manager management tool.

3. Add virtual machine to this pool. This machine should now show up in the list of machines added to the pool.

4. Migrate virtual machine to another virtual host server

Once you have completed step 4, the virtual machine will no longer show up as a member of its pool. You will be unable to add it, as it will not show up on the list of available virtual machines either. Once the virtual machine has been migrated back to its original host the machine will reappear in the list.
