We are having an issue with a remote desktop host running on win 2008 x64 r2 standard and a client running mstsc.exe is on windows 2003 server. after connecting to the host it seems like you always have to perform mouse clicks or keyboard strokes to get a desktop refresh.

Can someone please offer some advice or thoughts on this?

Kind regards.

Windows Server 2012 Virtual Desktop Template Issue

Hi

I have created a two server VDI infrastructure using Server 2012 RTM I have one server hosting the RDS connection broker and RD Web Access roles and then a separate server with Hyper-V server installed hosting the server 2012 RD Virtualisation Host.  I am hosting Windows 8 VDI images on these servers

When I create the virtual infrastructure from scratch I can created a new collection hosting pooled desktops and everything works no problem.  The issue arises when I need to update the template and re-create all the desktops.  For updating the desktops I am following the process below.

1- Make a copy of the existing desktop and then start it up in hyper-v and make my changes

2- Run sysprep with the /generalise /oobe /shutdown /mode:VM

3- Go into my Collection on my connection broker server and run the recreate all desktops task

4- Select my shutdown VM syspreped in step 2

At this stage I get an error stating "The virtual desktop must be in a stopped state:  Could not identify the state of the virtual desktop.  Ensure that the RD virtualisation host server is available on the network and the virtual desktop is shut down"

I have looked all over for errors in the logs and found nothing.  It look connection related or maybe something to do with WMI but I have run connection test between the servers and everything is ok.  The only solution I have found so far is if I remove the RD virtualisation host from my hyper-v server and then reboot and reinstall it then works again.

Can anybody help as I am running out of ideas on this one.

Thanks

Disable user profile disks for Administrator

Hi all,

I have a multiple 2012 RDS environment configured with user profile disks. All is working well, RD Gateway, load balanced etc...Trouble is when I want to manage BOTH the RD Servers, I need to log out of one and in to the other due to the user profile disk being in use. This can get annoying, so is there a way I can use user profile disks but disable it for Administrator(s)??

Thanks in advance.

No Certificate available in RDP properties for Windows 2003 server

Hi,

I'm configuring our servers to use SSL for their RDP connections. On all of our servers that are domain members I have been able to generate a certificate using the Certificate MMC and selecting Request a Certificate task.  I then used that certificate to allow the RDP connection to use SSL.

The problem I have is with one server that is not a domain member. When using the Certificate MMC the Request a Certificate task is not an option. I have tried other ways of generating a new certificate to the sever and applying it, such as going the the CA web site (http:\\CAName\certsrv) and creating a Web Server , Administrator or User cert, but when I go to the RDP properties and select edit for the certificate there is not a cert list there for me to choose. I can see these certs installed on the server in the Computer\Certificates\Personal folder on the  server.

Any idea's how I can generate the right type of certificate so that RDP connection properties will recognize it and let me use it for the SSL connection?

RDS 2012 does not seem to support RemoteApps/RDWeb working with RD Gateway and port changed from 443

$

Hi,

I am running a VM with an RDS 2012 deployment and all required roles on this VM: Web Access, Gateway, Licensing, Connection Broker and Session Host.

Only change from standard settings is that the RD Gateway's https port has been changed from 443 to 444 to allow it to work behind a NAT firewall where port 443 is required for another website. Router has got port forwarding from external port 444 to VM's port 444 (RD Gateway's port needs to be changed for RDWeb to work properly, otherwise the port number is dropped from its URLs).

In the internal network everything is working fine as one would expect with Deployment Properties RD Gateway set to Automatic (or Custom with "Bypass RD Gateway server for local addresses" set to True), for all of RemoteApps, RDWeb and rdp-client.

Externally, i.e., coming through the router from the outside, I can get the Windows 8 rdp-client (Note: this does not seem to work with a Windows 7 SP1 rdp-client even after patching and changing group policies to support rdp-protocol 8) to work by manually setting the RD Gateway to [myFQDN]:444 under Options/Advanced. It goes through the RD Gateway, the authentication is logged on the server, desktop comes across. Accordingly, in a saved rdp-file this shows as gatewayhostname:s:[myFQDN]:444.

What is not working externally are RemoteApps and RDWeb. Obviously, I have set the Deployment Properties RD Gateway to Custom Settings with the appropriate external FQDN (and, yes, the certs are good) but there is no option to set a the changed port number as the field does not allow this (same goes for the equivalent Powershell command). The downloaded rdp-files for the RemoteApps clearly show that the port for the RD Gateway is not picked up (gatewayhostname:s:[myFQDN] rather than the expected gatewayhostname:s:[myFQDN]:444). I guess that RDWeb uses the same rdp-files that the RemoteApps download (as can be found in the registry) so I assume that whatever solves the one will also solve the other.

Any ideas for a resolution? Or is this a bug/intentional restriction? It kind of beats the purpose of allowing a different port number if it is only fully working in a local network.

Thanks for your help.

Some questions regarding VDI

Hi I have implemented a test environment for VDI using following videos
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/video/microsoft-vdi-part-i-server-side-configuration
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/video/microsoft-vdi-part-ii-virtual-desktop-configuration.aspx
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/video/microsoft-vdi-part-iii-client-side-experiences

Right now I have only one Windows 7 VM in Virtual Desktop Pool.

One VM in a pool means only one user can connect; So does this mean I need to have 50 VM for 50 users to connect simultaneously ?
What would be the best way for me to duplicate the above Windows 7 VM?

Why would someone wants to use VDI instead RDS (Terminal Services)?

Server 2008r1 Terminal Services - Garbage printing

Hi

We have 4 Server 2008r1 Terminal Services hosts in a farm (TS08-TS11). All set up the same way. All of our staff (who are spanned across 10 different sites) connect to these to perform their daily tasks.

Each site has multiple printers, all of which are set up on our print server (FP01) and shared for the TS servers to connect to.

Recently, one of the four servers (TS09) started to have problems with printing - but only to one printer at one of the sites (Marina_PR02) - the rest are fine.

It doesn't matter what you try and print to it, it spits out page after page of heiroglyhics. I suspected a driver problem at the start, thinking it may be corrupted on the TS host in question. So I deleted all printer drivers from the server as well as deleted all the registry entries for them, then re-installed them as shared printers again.

This has not made a difference, and I am not sure what else to try. The printer is a Ricoh Aficio MP C5502A.

I'm looking for somewhere else to start troubleshooting.

Thanks!

LSM.exe process memory leak and RDS 2008 R2 SP1

$

Good morning, all.  I've been trying to find a fix for this for the last 8 months with no success.  I've read the questions asked by other users with the same issue but the answers haven't been helpful.  I'll give a little background first.

We have several RDS server farms all with fully patched Windows Server 2008 Enterprise R2 SP1.  We use a two-factor authentication system (smartcards) for users to log into these farms.  We have Symantec Endpoint 11 for our enterprise AV solution (we'll be heading to most recent version in  the first quarter next year).  All of these servers are VMs and most of them were cloned from the first two servers built for our two-factor authentication system.

Our first farm, which is the most heavily used, has the most problems because of this issue.  The others have it as well but not nearly as much.  The other farms are clones from the first farm (yes, I went through all motions of renewing the SIDs and such).

Here's the problem:  Sometimes within a few days, and other times as much as a month, something will trigger the LSM.exe process on a single server to have a memory leak.  A server running for almost a week without the trigger will have the LSM.exe process at 4-5mb of memory usage and uses very little CPU.  If the memory leak is triggered, the LSM.exe process will grow to 50mb+ memory usage in a matter of hours and use more and more CPU.  Once it hits 80-90mb, there is a noticable degredation in performance.  If it gets to 200+, the server becomes unresponsive and the CPU is pegged.  The more people login and reconnect to sessions, the faster it climbs.  The only way I know to reset the LSM.exe process is to restart the server.

I read a few months ago that Terminal Services Manager in Windows XP or 2003 can trigger this memory leak.  I sent a notice out to our network group to please use the Remote Desktop Services Manger in Win7 or 2008 to manage these servers.  I've seen a decline in the issue since then but it still occurs.  It doesn't happen to all servers.  Only one or two at a time.  It is never an entire farm.  As I said, it happens mostly on our most heavily used farm which was used to clone the others.  The others haven't really had the issue because of the slower traffic on them.

Is there a patch that I'm missing?  Is there a way to troubleshoot it further?  Is there a way to create a dump file for the process like "userdump.exe" from XP and 2003?  What am I missing?  I'm attaching the specs of one of our servers to this question.  The other servers have the same specs.

Remote sessions's Printer Redirection to cleint local machine only

We have 2003 terminal server. when two users are connected to teminal server from their local machines, they are able to see each others locally connected printers in the sessions.

For example if user1 is connected to 'Termserver' he is able to see user2's local computer connected printers.

also same thing for user2, if user2 is connected to 'Termserver' he is able to see user1's local computer connected printers.

But, user1 only be able to see his local connected computer printers. But, not user2 local computer's printers.

Is it possible to configure in terminal server 2003?

Using TS2008 with local computers

I'm wondering if it's possible to connect to a TS2008 through a local installed application like Autocad.

Since it is possible to redirect printers and drives to the TS2008, why should you not be able to do this in an easy the other way?

Windows server 2012 Remoteapp SSO with Windows 7 Clients

I have set up a Windows 2012 RDS server in my test environment, all seems great and works. But when I use the remoteapp facility on a windows 7 client, it always asks me for logon credentials.

How can I set up SSO for this?

RDWeb and URL/hostname dependencies

Just do not understand how RDWeb truly works. Fresh Server 2008 SP1 with Session Host and RDWeb, have domain name and ip address. If accessed by hostname or by IP  from client (Win 7 SP1, IE9) - everything is OK. In DNS create for this server second A-entry. When access to server from same client (Win 7 SP1, IE9) via second DNS name - RDWeb fails with ASP.NET error (Event code: 3005, HttpException in '/RDWeb/Pages'.).  On server itself by this domain name site opens normally.

Done a second fresh server for tests, same config. If accessed by hostname or by IP  from client - everything is OK. If by second DNS name - the login form is opened, but nothing happens after entering login and password - form just reloaded without any messages.

Is there a strict relation between server name and RDWeb client access URL? Where it written?

VPN connects, but cannot connect RDP or ping on remote network

FYI -- originally posted this in the Win8 forums and was asked to post here as well...

This is a fresh install of Win8 Pro.  For a couple of weeks my VPN connection (PPTP router at work) was working fine, but now it has stopped working.

VPN will connect, but once connected I cannot access any remote computers or devices.  No RDP or pings, no error messages.  Connecting VPN from my Mac works just fine, and I can RDP & ping on that connection, so I do not think it is an issue with my home or work routers.

So far I have done the following to troubleshoot:
 - reboot routers on both sides
 - disabled Win8 firewalls
 - disabled Windows Defender
 - no other firewall/security software installed
 - deleted/recreated VPN connection
 - used netsh to reset tcpip
 - checked arp

So far, nothing seems to help.
Any ideas?
Dave

Can't enable Drive/Printer-Redirection

Hi there,

I've setup 2008 R2 with Remote Desktop Services and want to enable Drive-Redirection so Users which use Remote-Apps can use their local drives. Unfortunately I cannot remove the mark at "RDP-Tcp Properties" > "Client Settings" and Drive, Printer etc is greyed out and clicking on the checkbox doesn't work. I found no Policy which may be responsible for this...

Where do I have to enable Drive-Redirection?!

Remote profiles, userenv 1500 and 1508 error Win Server 2003

Hello,

In our company we have three terminal servers with Windows Server 2003. User profiles are remote, stored on NAS.

After few days after reseting the server users cannot login. there are Errors userenv 1500 and 1508.

For sure servers have enough power.

In the Internet there is a lot of similar problems but i've tried every solution:

- UPHClean installed,

- registry edited (PoolUsageMaximum word created)

- page file increased,

- antivir software changed,

- updates,

- i have even reinstalled Windows.

None of those worked. What is interesting - the problem is present only on one server. When this happens there are about 35 people logged in.

Do you have any idea what else i could do?

VDI - prevent to start VMs

We have Windows Server 2012 - VDI - pooled collection.

I don't understand how RD Virtualization host agent starts VMs in pool.
I would like to prevent that VMs are started when VDI is not in use.
Normally would be that VMs are in saved state, ready.
Are VMs started also when collection is not visible?

We could stop RD Virtualization host agent, but with this we disable all collections.

Thanks for help in advance!
