Thin client deployment without Terminal services

$

Hi All

We are about to embark on a large UK IT Project to connect users in various locations using only Internet Explorer to a web app server hosted at a data centre.
I am recommending using thin clients with Windows embedded 7 P for ~2500 users.
Because the thin client devices will only ever be needed for web access (i.e. only Internet Browser application is required for ALL Applications), we do not see the necessity of having a central remote desktop infrastructure, such as Microsoft Remote FX/Terminal services. We would simply like to maintain & manage the OS and browser only. Unfortunately a low cost fat client approach is not feasible due to the requirements & costs set out in the project. Question is, is it feasible to simply deploy Thin clients with Windows Embedded 7 P with IE & a security product without a central remote desktop infrastructure and simply manage this through SCCM or Windows Embedded device manager for example. I am making the assumption that the 16GB Flash drive for the devices we selected are sufficient for caching and any plugins needed

I would appreciate you expert views on this, or if there is an alternative way to deploy IE only PCs with the ability to manage the O/S, IE & security app only without the need for a central remote desktop infrastructure such as Citrix, VMWareView or MS Terminal services

How to know a disconnection is caused by idle time out expired

I am new to Windows Terminal Services.

In my c# project, I listen to the system event to get the remote disconnection event. But I can't identify if the disconnection is caused by idle timeout expired or network issue or other reasons. I have searched in Internet these days but no found yet.

Could anyone have idea about that?

Thank you.

Track Remote Desktop Session Host who requested a CAL

Hello Everyone,

I'm trying to track a RDSH who requested the CAL for a particular device, is that possible? I see on the Licensing manager reports and on the event viewer it doesn't have anything that keeps track of that.

A little background:

We are a server hosting company and we want to offer our customers RDS CALs from a centralized RD Licensing server, so in order to bill properly our customers we need to know which server requested which CAL.  I noticed RDS CALs are more organization oriented and they won't keep track of the server since it will not matter since it will work for all RDSH servers that have the same RD Licensing server(once again organization oriented).  I just figured someone out there must've had to deal with a situation like this.

Thanks for the help!

Hello,

2k8 R2 server not a terminal server but Remote Desktop is available for administration.

Every 5 minutes, the system logs: Event 1057 - The Terminal Server has failed to create a new self signed certificate to be used for Terminal Server authentication on SSL connections. The relevant status code was Object already exists.

It logs this event twice every 5 minutes.

Cannot Create Kerberos Identity for RemoteApp Farm

I followed the instructions in http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2009/05/20/creating-kerberos-identity-for-rd-session-host-farms-part-i-using-the-remote-desktop-services-provider-for-windows-powershell.aspx to create a Kerberos Identity for my RemoteApp farm, but at the end, I get a message: "Set-Item : Access to the object at RDS:\RDSFarms\farm.domain.com\KerbIdentity\EnableKerbIdentity is denied for the cmdlet Set-Item.The Kerberos ID cannot be enabled. Either the Domain could not be contacted, or Account Name is not valid."  It does not seem to matter what accountName I input.

How do I fix this problem and EnableKerbIdentity?

This brings to mind other questions:  Does this account need to be pre-existing, or will the PowerShell command create it?  If the latter, what does it require and where will it put the account?  Does the name have to be "domain\name" or perhaps "name@domain.com"?

Thanks in advance.

Does relative weight work?

I have one farm which includes two windows 2008 R2 terminal servers server 1 and server 2

I want users to connect to server 1 first always.  But, No matter what I try it, it alwasys connects me to the server 2 first and certainly I log off.

I changed relative weight 600 on the server 1 and 50 on the server 2.  Still, connects me to the server 2 first?

Will relative weight work?

Thank you.

Lockdown 2008 terminal server users

Just setup a new Windows 2008 terminal server and do not wish for every user that does connect to it to have free roam on it. What I mean is that I do not wish for Jim a standard user to log in and have the ability to even see "Administrative tools".

So is there a best practice on how to set this up and block users? Please assist.

Terminal Server Login Error

We have a terminal setup with web access so our providers can login to the system from home without a VPN.  They simply click the RDP shortcut we have setup and boom they're in.  We recently virtualized this server.  Ever since virtualizing a user can get to the login screen but when they put there username/password the welcome shows then you're disconnected from the server.  What can we do?

XPS Document writer redirected saves on server

Hello,

I am trying to setup the printing on XPS Document writer on RDS (Server 2008 R2). Printer redirection works fine(I have just disabled "Use Easy Print driver first" because of problems it was causing on host-based HP printers) with one exception - the XPS printer (redirected) "Save as" dialog contains server disks and folders instead of clients folders - that means XPS printing is not redirected. Client is W7 and I tried to connect to multiple RDS servers but the behavior is the same. Seems to be client issue.
Do someone please know what could be the problem?

Thank you.

using certificates with 2008R2 RDS farm

$

Hello, would appreciate some guidance on what certificates are necessary in our RDS farm scenario. I am in process of setting up a 5 server session host farm with a single connection broker server. This farm will be accessible by both nondomain and domain joined computers but all users connect through our SSL VPN before accessing the farm thus no gateway is required.

Im currently getting prompted with the various certificate warnings and would like to get a better understanding of what typer of certs are needed where. Im assuming the connection broker needs an SSL cert for RDWeb? What about each session host server? Would each session host server require an SSL cert with the farm name?

Would appreciate hearing what works best for others.

thanks for your help

Terminal Services App child windows open in the background

$

We recently set up an app server with Win Server 2008 R2 standard.  The apps work great, but I have this strange issue with child windows that open within the apps.  For example, if I open Outlook, the main window comes to the front/top of my screen.  When I open my FIRST email it comes to the front, but any other emails will open behind the main Outlook window.  This is also happening in a program called Great Plains that helps manage quantities in the warehouse and shipments, but the problem there is whenever a quantity is incorrect an error window pops up that has to be closed before you can change ANY window, but it opens behind the main window, so you can't change to the error window to close it and you have to kill the program in task manager and reopen.  The users have Windows XP w/SP3 and they use Office, Great Plains, Adobe and Quickbooks as apps.  I'm sorry if this question has been answered before, but my eyes are sore from reading so many forums with similar, but not quite the same problems.  Please help!

access denied using rdp

First I have reviewed and looked at the other posts that seem similar to our issue but no help. Environment is as follows: two servers, one is  SBS 2011 and the second is a windows 2008 r2 serving as a terminal server for a specific application on the same server (non-dc). Users remote into the terminal server to access the application and starting last week they were intermittently getting kicked out and then getting "Access denied" when trying to reconnect even though their previous session was not showing in the TS manager. There is no rhyme or reason that we have been able to detect as it affects only one user and never the same user and when it does happen all other users are still fine and working ok. No event errors showing in log files and happens to internal as well as external people coming in via vpn. any help or suggestions greatly appreciated. regards and respect, Bill

Help with Certificates and SSO

$

Yes I have searched the forums on this topic but I am still confused. Here's my environment:

2x Windows 2008 SP2 session host servers

1x Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Session broker

The Farm is accessible to employees only (domain joined and disjoined computers) using the internal DNS name of TSFARM1.company.pri External employees (sales) access the farm via a VPN. The purpose is to allow users to have a full function desktop, so this is not for RemoteApp etc.

My users receive security warnings about the session broker server then again about the session host server when launching the RDP client. I would like to eliminate this. I also would like to have SSO enable to help speed the process and reduce the amount of log ins.

My questions are:

1. How do I request a CSR for my internal domain (which server is this generated from)? This way I can use it on multiple servers. I contacted Comodo and they said they can not issue a cert for the "*.company.pri" domain. On the forums I see many examples of this but they are usually for .com domains.

2. How do I then apply this to SSO. Just to have my expectation set. SSO means that I can create a rdp file that connects to the farm and not provide credentials on the rdp file. This will pass the logged in credentials of the computer to the farm correct? How will this behave with my non domain joined computers?

Thanks,

TKE402

Firewall Ports for External RDP Access

If I was to install RDWeb, and RD Gateway along with Remote Desktop all on a single server (no DMZ) would I have to have 443 AND 3389 open through the firewall, or does RD Gateway have a way to proxy that connection?

I understand it can proxy the connection if the Remote Desktop server is on another machine, but what if its all running on the same machine?

RDSH Redirection Mode: Autologon to Desktop Pool possible?

Hi,

consider the following simple scenario: i want to provide acess to a VDI Desktop Pool ( 5 x Win7) via one Autologon Account.

Is it possible to savely let Clients Connect to the Win7 Desktops only one at a time?

Is it possible to safely configure the redirector to only connect to "empty" Win7 Desktops i.e. no logged (Autologon)User no disconnected session(same Autologon User)? With 3d Party Connection Broker? I would configure GPO to logoff Disconnected Sessions.

Thank you.

Server 2012: RD Connection broker randomly crashes

$

Hi,

As a part of my RD deployment I run a VM with an only RDCB role installed. VM has 512 memory for startup, extensible to 4Gb, OS installed is Server 2012 Std with GUI. Currently it has almost no load, as it works in test environment.

Some time after initial installation it worked well, then begun to randomly crash. Then it enters cyclic reboot (crash-reboot-crash-reboot), from which it doesn't automatically recover. The only way to recover VM is to boot it in safe mode, then reboot normally. Sometimes it needs to be powered down then started up, as it won't recover otherwise.

Error log says:

which stands for:

Computer was reset after critical error. Error code: 0x00000050 (0xfffffa8302b3d000, 0x0000000000000000, 0xfffff80068cf8f25, 0x0000000000000000). Memory dump saved to: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP. Report code: 101312-10578-01.

Dose anyone have any ideas what can it be and how can the problem be resolved?

RemoteFX USB redirection to a Server 2012 Virtual Machine from a Windows Thin PC Client

$

Hello Everyone

Please can I request some advice in regards to setting up remotefx usb redirection to a windows 2012 server vm that is hosted on windows 2012 virtual host.  The nature of this usb redirection is initially for a testing environment but essentially I need to redirect a polycom cx600 lync phone from a windows thin pc to windows 2012 terminal services remote desktop with lnyc 2010 installed.

My company currently operates server 2008 r2 remote desktops in a terminal services farm.  My initial investigation has highlighted that server 2008 r2 as a vm does not support remotefx usb redirection from any client machine.  I was able to redirect the usb to a windows 7 sp1 enterprise vm that was hosted in hyper-v on a windows server 2008 r2 virtual host.  Incidentally I was also able to redirect the usb to a windows 8 vm that was hosted in hyper-v on a windows server 2008 r2 virtual host.

A Microsoft specialist at a conference advised me that it was possible to run a 2012 vm on a 2012 vh, this is alongside a 2012 session host and a 2012 connection broker.  The 2008 install recommends certain installation parameters to the different servers, 2012 is very different.  I have added the all the servers (sh,cb and wa) to a group on the virtual host and disseminated the roles in a remote desktop installation. This is where I hit a wall.  Can anyone offer advice or links?  Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

Danny
