Hi,

We have Remote Desktop Farm so all users are connecting to their desktop using RD.

RD servers are Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise editions.

Users are having very slow loading websites through RD using IE9. There are certain type of websites loading very slow.

Eg. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/internet-explorer/products/ie-9/welcome
http://www.smallmiracle-srilanka.co.uk/
http://www.ctc-aspire.co.uk/

pga etakes agaes to load.

There are few other browsers are also installed on the RD servers which does not have this issue.

I checked on the RD servers itself with IE9 & dont see the slow down. I am not sure any GP creating this issue.

Can Windows 2012 RDS CALs be used for Windows 2003 TS Server?

Hi

I've got a Windows 2012 license server with 2012 RDS Cals installed. I've also got a large number of 2003 TS servers that need to access this license server for CALs.

Can a 2012 license server serve up cals to a 2003 server?

The reason I ask is I tested with one of the 2003 servers and found that the 2012 license server issued a temporary license rather then one from the 2012 pool

GPO wallpaper Windows 2008R2 session host

I configured a GPO to force the wallpaper for user connecting to our remote session host running Windows server 2008R2. The policy does not seem to function. Enclosed you will find a screenshot of the applied policy. I went through a couple of posts on the forum and also tried the following script:

:: Configure Wallpaper
REG ADD "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop" /V Wallpaper /T REG_SZ /F /D "\\dc1\Wallpaper\AS-Wallpaper-v2.jpg"
REG ADD "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop" /V WallpaperStyle /T REG_SZ /F /D 0
REG ADD "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop" /V TileWallpaper /T REG_SZ /F /D 2
:: Make the changes effective immediately
%SystemRoot%\System32\RUNDLL32.EXE user32.dll, UpdatePerUserSystemParameters

After a ran this script and opened control panel- display- change desktop background and close it straight away. The background image is showed. When I log off and log back on the image is gone. The background color is fine, it is just the image.

Default Printer changes - Terminal Server 2008

We have three TS 2008 servers using session broker. People are complaining that the default printer keeps changing.
We make sure they log off correctly so it's saved to their profile, cannot see any errors but when they log back in, it's changed to a local print queue e.g pdf creator.

I have been using folder redirection and thought that maybe causing it but it doesn't look like it.
I have been having multiple issue with printing and terminal server 2008 but need to knock them off one at a time I think.

particular (admin) user will not load profile or my documents correctly..

I have an xp sp3 user with roaming profile and My Documents redirected to \\fileserver\users\username \My documents.
When they log into 2008 sp1 all the folders redirect except for Documents with the error 502, source Folder Redirection. The details gives the following peculiar error message - Failed to apply policy and redirect folder "Documents" to "\\fileserver\users\username\My documents". Redirection options=9211. The following error occurred: "Failed to build the list of regular subfolders under "\\TERMSERVER\\users\username\Documents". Error details: The network name cannot be found. (TERMSERVER being the name of the terminal server)

Well that is hardly surprising as I don't have a \\termserver\users share on the terminal server but there are very few relevant search pages that help with the regular subfolders settings.
The weird thing is that things like video does redirect - "Successfully applied policy and redirected folder "Videos" to "\\fileserver\users\username\My Documents\My Videos"

So if it can redirect videos why can't it do the documents?

At one point I deleted c:\users\username for this user and then it was redirecting the My Documents ok but I then kept getting ""Your user profile was not loaded correctly!" and eventvwr shows "Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off". So at this point my redirection works, but I lose my profile!  As per http://tinyurl.com/cnesj9 I deleted the entry in the sid list in hkey_Local_machine\software\microsoft\windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList and rebooted and then on next login I went back to the same thing - My documents not working but the profile is permanent!

When it's not working, right clicking on Documents in the start menu gives me a blank dialog box with nothing displayed at all.

I created a brand new user, logged in with xp, vista and windows2008 and the profile roams and my documents roam with the same settings so I know it *should* work!

I set the FdeployDebugLevel flag as per http://technet.mirosoft.com/en-us/library/cc759194.aspx but this does not produce a file within the debug\usermode folder (but does seem to provide better logging within eventvwr)

Users do not have a terminal server profile set in ADUC, profile IS set in the profile tab to \\fileserver\profiles\username (with all roaming folders redirected to \\fileserver\users\username)

If I compare the rsop for my two users they are identical apart from the non-working one is missing My Documents and the folder direction has "failed due to the error listed below. Cannot complete this function"

Any ideas? I've been banging my head against a brick wall on this problem for far too long

The user profile service failed the logon user profile cannot be loaded

Hi

I have a problem with one of my users where she cannot log onto two of the four terminal servers in my RDS farm, she gets the error above. The user has a roaming profile on a file server. I tried finding the SID under profile list in the registry to delete it on the terminal servers and on the file server but cannot find the SID. I also tried deleting the roaming profile completely to see if that would help but it does not. This is on Server 2008R2 Standard.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Brad.

Hi,

I have an urgent case, I have two RDVH named cloud01 and cloud02, my RDCB install in cloud01 as a Hyper-V VM named rdcb01.

I find sometime the RDMS Console UI in rdcb01 will hang, The UI keep refreshing and with no collection can be show in the UI, actually I have three collections.

But I try to use Powershell cmdlet to manage or show the status of my RDS, everything is ok.

So I think something hang my UI, but I don't know why.

[RIDDLE] Why do I have randoms slow RDC logon

$

Hello,

Here the riddle:

1 - All my servers (DC included) have a good DNS configuration, all patchs, no virus.

2 - It happens randomly

3 - It happens for everyone, included administrators

4 - It disappears after a reboot or without doing anything !

5 - It happens on TSE servers

6 - We don't use Profile Redirection

7 - We don't have plenty of GPO.

8 - It happens even without specifical GPO's

9 - Already checked using Process Monitor, nothing strange.

10 - So why do I still have random slow logon, blocked on "Applying personnal settings" during 5 to 30 minutes ?

EDIT: Added point 9.

Terminal Server getting BSOD please help!

Hi people, I´m managing 3 terminal servers, all these servers are running on hyper-v host, I'll try to describe the scenary below:

All machines are up to date and running Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 (x64).

I have a lot users connect in each one of these virtual machines (I believe 100 users per vm), printer redirection is enabled and I getting BSODs frequently.

I´ve been analyzing the crash dump and it says that probably the driver called "rbdss.sys" is causing the issue, I´ll past a fragment of the crash dump below.

I´ve been trying to understand why this is happening, I believe that when some printer is getting redirect some faulty driver installed causes the BSOD.

Easy print driver is enabled but most of printers are using proprietary drivers.

I really appreciate any suggestion, thanks in advantage and sorry my poor english.

Moving Customer from ELA to SPLA

Hello Everyone:

My apologies if this question has been discussed before, however I was not able to find a ton of information on this specific topic. I have a customer that is looking to outsource their Windows desktops to us under our DaaS offering based on MS SPLA. We will be providing them with a Remote Desktop Session (RDS, Windows 2012) and MS Office. They are a current MS ELA customer and run MS Exchange in their environment, and they had just renewed their Software Assurance agreement. Since they will be keeping MS Exchange is there any program that MS offers that allows a customer to transfer their MS desktops licensing under a ELA agreement over to a MS SPLA agreement providing an RDS session \ desktop without having to restructure the Exchange licensing?

Best Regards,

John

*IMPORTANT* Firewall Considerations for Terminal Services Gateway

$

Hey all,

I just spent 3 days ripping my hair out over this and using packet analyzers so I hope I can save someone the trouble.

Symptom:
Your external users are trying to access RemoteApp or Desktops via Terminal Services Gateway from across the internet, and the initial connection takes 30-60 seconds.

Solution:
If you publish Terminal Services Gateway through a firewall and only allow SSL to come through, YOU MUST CONFIGURE YOUR FIREWALL TO ACTIVELY BLOCK PORT 3389 TO THE TS GATEWAY.

There's a bug (feature?) in RDC 6.1 where it will attempt to make an RDP connection first before it tries the SSL connection. I've found absolutely no way to configure the RDP shortcut to avoid this. If your firewall silently drops this request, RDP will sit there for about 30 seconds before it times out, making your RemoteApp connections painfully slow. If your firewall actively rejects the 3389 RDP connection, then RDC will make the SSL connection immediately.

If anyone can shed some more light on this or a better fix, that'd be great. Hope that helps, and maybe RDC 6.2 will fix that.

Confusion w/ number of RDC connections allowed

$

Hello,

We have several Wyse thin clients/terminals that will be connecting to a vmware virtual server, with Server 2008 Std 32 bit, via RDC connections. These sessions will run simultaneously. How many connections are actually allowed? I've seen mentions of 2 and others as high as 200. I will create local accounts on the server, so these devices will not be connecting w/ the same account. With different local accounts, can 5 RDC connections to Server 2008 be allowed? I understand the configuring to remove restrictions to allow only one account. But needing to find out what my max, or if 5 connections will work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much!

Windows 2012 RDS- Collections- Multiple based on group memebership & disable "Connect to remote PC"

$

I have set up a single Windows 2012 Server and installed all of the RDS roles onto that server.  I have 2 security groups that have users added to them, Standard and Advanced.

I want to be able to do the following:

1) Disable the 'connect to remote PC" function on the RDWEB for Standard users, and allow it only for the Advanced group.

2) If Item 1 is not possible, create 2 Collections so that I can add the RDP feature as an available App for the Advanced group but not the Standard user group.

I have the base Collection I want configured and assigned to the Standard group, how do I create the 2nd collection for the Advanced group when there is only one Host Server in the deployment. This is a small deployment<50 users total.

RDP saved credentials when not connected to the domain

I have a SCADA system with a terminal server and several clients. The terminal server functions are mainly used for remoteapp connections to the SCADA software. All of SCADA the equipment is configured as part of a company domain but under everyday conditions the SCADA equipment network is not connected to the company network and can not reach the domain controller.

I need the RDPs for the remoteapps to start up and login automaticall. When I try to use saved credentials the login fails for the server not being fully verified. I have tried several common solutions that have been shown to fix this issue with win7 and server 08 R2, including adding the TERMSRV/* to the credentials group policies. This policy change maybe my fix but when I do the "gpupdate /force" the user policy update succeeds but the computer policy fails because of no connectivity to the network(domain controller?).

How do I enable using saved credentials with out being connected to the DC?

An authentication error has occured (Code: 0x607)

Hi all,

This one is driving me NUTS! The problem itself is when I go to connect to a session host using a web access server I get the error in the title.  This is only happening to some of my session hosts and not all.  I have compared them and can't find a single difference.  I also cant find anything useful in the event logs about this.  Below is my setup.

A full RDS environment using all Windows Server 2012 Data Center.  Nothing 2008 R2.  All Clean installs.

I have 6 servers a VM's split evenly between 2 ESXi 5.1 Hosts.
1. MP-RDP-CB1.inucoda.net (Connection Broker 1)
2. MP-RDP-CB2.inucoda.net (Connection Broker 2)
3. MP-RDP-GW1.inucoda.net (Gateway Server 1)
4. MP-RDP-GW2.inucoda.net (Gateway Server 2)
5. MP-RDP-WA1.inucoda.net (Web Access Server 1)
6. MP-RDP-WA2.inucoda.net (Web Access Server 2)

inucoda.net is an network that is the Domain that all servers are joined to via 2 Domain Controllers splits between each ESXi Host.
My outside domain that you can get to from the web is ucoda.net

The connection brokers have all servers used including session hosts added to the server pool and are configured in HA mode. They use a SQL Server 2012 Fail-over cluster that is on a separate set of VMs for their database and the DNS is configured as round robin. MP-RDP-CB.inucoda.net.  There are two entries of this each with one of the two IPs of the CB1 and CB2 servers.

On each CB server there is a RDS License server role installed with CALs installed and activated/registered. Both LIC servers have been added to the RDS deployment properties.

The GW servers each have the NLB role installed with an extra network adepter for NLB use. There is a DNS name of MP-RDP-GW.inucoda.net that points to the NLB IP of the GW Cluster.  Also both GW servers were added to the GW Server Farm part of the the GW properties.

The WA servers are also in a NLB Cluster with an extra adapter and a DNS of MP-RDP-WA.inucoda.net pointing to the NLB IP.

Up steam from our inside Windows Domain at our ISP level there is a DNS entry of MP-RDP-WA.ucdoa.net and it points to the NLB IP of the WA NLB Cluster.  (This is not a public IP, we require you be on our VPN to be able to access the IP).

For certificates we have a Comodo issued wildcard of *.ucoda.net with the corresponding Comodo Root Trust and Intermediate Certs. We also have a wildcard *.inucoda.net created by our inside CA.

The *.inucoda.net cert is used for the CB SSO, CB Publishing, and GW while the *.ucoda.net cert is used for the WA.

All session hosts have been configured to use the *.inucoda.net for their RDP sessions.

I can confirm that the *ucoda.net cert is used for the WA part and all other parts are reporting the *inucoda.net, all with no errors or warnings.

For each session collection only one session host is used with no apps, (just RDP).  Security is set to only use NLA, SSL 1.0, High.

On each session host I have verified that the *inucoda and *ucoda certs are installed and the internal CA and Comodo CA/Intermediate CA is installed in the correct stores.  I have also verified that COM Security has the domain\TS Web Access group set with full perms for the Access and Launch/Activation. Also for WMI  Root\CMIV2\TermicalServcies Security has the domain\Ts Web Access group set with full perms. Lastly each group/user that has access to RDS is listed in the Remote Desktop users.

I've checked that both WA servers are listed in the TS Web Access group.

The GW servers RAS/RAP policies are set to be pretty open for testing with using any port, any network resource, and Domain Users and Domain Admins listed.

I have been trying to connect with Windows 8 and Windows 7 clients as the domain\administrator account.  Some of my session hosts connect fine and other don't .  It's always the same ones that connect and don't connect.  I can't find any difference  between the.   I've also blown away my entire RDS and started over with just a 3 server single node model with no NLB or RR DNS and the same exact error happens on certain servers.  I have sense gone back to the 6 server setup described here and again the same error on the same session hosts.

I have also tried Negotiate and RDS Compatible and disabling NLA only for security.  No change.  Now here is the interesting part. If I remove GW servers from RDS by just saying not to use them (not actually uninstalling them or anything), all session hosts connect just fine every time.  When I first did my RDS setup I got he same error with code 0x607 for every connection attempt and found i had to set the RAS/RAP to use any network resource instead of Domain Computers.  However, it is currently set like that and some still don't connect.   So it works with out the GW servers just fine.  It also works without them in the 6 node setup as well as the 3 node setup.

I don't want to use it without the GW servers because since I am using all inside subnets with a VPN I have to add the CB IP/Name to my host file or it will not resolve and give an error about reaching the Connection Broker. Because I want to use a HA setup this is no good as there are two servers for it.  That's why I use the NLB IP of the WA and publish it with outside DNS with our ISP.

Any ideas at all??

Thanks,
Chris

Windows 8 / IE10 compatibility issues with Windows Server 2008 r2

I'm logging my work PC via IE10 on Windows 8 64-bit to a Windows Server 2008 r2 server.

When the RDP screen comes up to get to the PC, I only have the option of connecting using 256 colours.  I have compared my settings to colleagues who use Windows 7 64-bit, and they are identical.  Are there any known compatibility issues, and is there a way to fix it?

I have also tried changing the IE10 environment to IE9 and IE8, but with the same problem

Is is possible to access a remoteapp when remote desktoping in?

$

I'm currently playing with remote apps as it's something I might use when I build a home server. I'm liking what I see so far however this is one thing I'd like to see if it's possible.

If I have a remote app running on the user Tiger and then I remote desktop into the server using Tiger as the user. I can not see or access the remote app. I can see the process in the task manager under the user Tiger though.

Is is possible to access a remote app while logged into the full remote desktop? I'd like to be able to use remote apps to access a few programs I'd want running remotely all the time and still be able to remote desktop in and access those program among the others running on the server.

If this has been answered before, sorry but I didn't find anything relevant while searching.
