Microsoft VDI 2012 | Connection to clients are denied

I have a problem using RDS on Windows Server 2012, I have completed the product several times, but this time I have installed it in a very complex environment, anyway after I completed the first installation and configuration, I tried to log on through the RDWeb using a domain user and I got the following error:

“The connection was denied because the user account is not authorized
for remote login.”

I checked the event viewer and found this

RD Connection Broker failed to process the connection request for user <Domain>\<user>.
Failed to find Resource Plugin OR an end point for the user.
Error: Access is denied.

I tried adding the user to the remote desktop users of the VMs, the Connection Broker and also the Host, but it didn't solve it. I also added it to the Administrators of the previous machines but with no luck. Eventually I added it to the Domain Admins and also failed.

Tried with more than one user but failed everytime. Can someone please help me solve this issue?

Thanks!

MSVCR100.dll

Our users are using Remote Desktop Web Access.

When opening Acrobat Reader or trying to open a PDF attachment in an email, I have one user that receives an AcroRd32.exe system error that states “The program can’t start because MSVCR100.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.” Acrobat Reader functions properly for all other users in a Web Access session on the TS server. The problem exists regardless of the workstation the user logs in from. I have toyed with the idea of deleting the Adobe folder from the user’s profile under Local, LocalLow and Roaming directories but am unsure of the ramifications of that action. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

"The remote session was disconnected because there were network problems during the licensing protocol" after enabling RemoteFX Windows 8 VM

I receive the error anytime I try to connect (from Windows 7 physical client machines running the recent RDP 8 "update") to the Windows 8 VM (w/RemoteFx enabled) running on Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V Server. The GPU on the server is DirectX 11 capable. At one point this was working, however, just recently this stopped working (not sure if any Windows Server 2012 updates did this or the RDP 8 "update" for Windows 7/2008 R2).

If I connect to the Windows 8 VM (with RemoteFx enabled) from the Hyper-V manager, the connection works (no licensing protocol errors)

However, if I remove the RemoteFx from the Windows 8 VM, all RDP 8 clients connect fine.

I've checked all the event logs (noticed no errors) and the Remote Desktop Virtualization Host Agent is running. I've checked the RD Licensing Diagnoser and no errors reported.

Basic Questions about RDS 2012

$

Just installed my first ever RDS Server 2012 and i have been playing around and reading various blogs / articles regarding configuration. The server is part of a domain with SBS2011 as the main DC.

I wanted to set the server up to give standard remote desktop capability to a satellite office so that they can access an SQL based application and give me central management of the apps they are using. When I first installed RDS it setup a Session with various RemoteApps which looked great but users would have to open about 7-8 different published apps every time they login. Instead I want a standard remote desktop server but I cant work out how to do it. A few questions…

  • Am I right in thinking a session is remote desktop based as standard and if I publish a remote app it then disabled remote desktop?
  • Do I need to install the RD gateway on the RDS server or can I use the RWW RDP Gateway on the SBS2011 server?
  • Currently they are using XP based roaming profiles which means new V2 profiles will be created. Is there any way to force RDS to use XP based profiles?

Thanks in advance

Logging in with RDP not working with cached domain credentials on Windows Server 2003

$

We have some remote sites without DCs and DNS/DHCP servers that occasionally experience a network outage, preventing users and computers at those sites from authenticating with a DC. My understanding is that with cached credentials users still ought to be able to log into local servers using RDP from their desktops and thin clients. I tested this scenario in our test lab and was able to RDP into Windows Server 2008 boxes from both thin clients and desktops just fine; however, whenever I tried to RDP into a Windows Server 2003 box I got this error:

The System cannot log you on due to the following error:
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.

Please try again or consult your system administrator.

I have verified that the Local Security Policy on these servers is set to cache the default 10 logins.

Is there a change in the mechanism for logging in via a RDP session using a cached login between Server 2003 and Server 2008? Whatever is preventing logging into a 2003 box doesn't exist with 2008 as RDP works just fine without DNS in that scenario. Are there any settings I can look at and change to make Server 2003 work like Server 2008?

Windows 2012 RemoteApp: Drag/Drop between application windows

We have an application which normally installs on user computers/workstations.  We are looking to support RemoteApp based deployments (vs. standard RDP/TS) of the application.

We are in the process of testing our application under RemoteApp and we have encountered an odd problem.

There are a number of places within our application where users can drag/drop objects between *application* windows, to define relationships etc.

Under RemoteApp, however, the application receives drop commands (left-mouse release) as soon as the client cursor hovers over one of the open windows (most windows are drop targets), even though the user is still holding the mouse button down.

Needless to say, this causes issues -- drops occuring on wrong forms, users not being able to place drops within ordered lists.

Is this a known issue?  If there a solution for this?

Where is the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration tool in Server 2012 ?

Where is the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration tool in Server 2012 ?

This is an MMC snap-in found on earlier servers, even if RDS is not installed.  In Server 2012, even if the Remote Desktop Session Host role is installed, this tool is still not available.

I'm looking for the Server 2012 tool to adjust security settings like TLS authentication, High encryption level, choice of TLS certificate, NLA, etc.

Thanks!

2012 Must expose both RD web AND RD gateway ?

Needing some clarification here....  I have a 2012 RD infrastructure in place.. all roles on individual machines except RD web and RD broker are on same VM.

I'm trying to determine if I will have to expose 443 on both teh RD Web  AND the RD Gateway ???    I really just want only one server exposed to the internet (i.e. RD Gateway 443/3391)  is this not possible?

My users will need RD Web since I'm using pooled collections ..

Secure RD Gateway with PhoneFactor using Radius

I have followed the document "Secure RD Gateway with PhoneFactor using Radius" found on the PhoneFactor customer portal but I am unable to get it to work.

I first set it all up without PF and it works but after making the modifications according to the document I am unable to reach my remote desktop.

I have a Windows Server 2008R2 server alone in our DMZ acting as the gateway to remote desktops in our production LAN.

Is it able to work using only the local SAM or does it require AD membership or LDAP bind? It does not specify in the document.

The PF authentication works when I directly RDP into the server.

I am asking this here because I saw that Microsoft had acquired PhoneFactor and I haven't found any better forum to approach.

Thank you.

Hi All,

I have an RDS Server with Load Balancing for three Terminal Servers. My issue is that when the users login and select a default printer it never sticks when they go back on the same Server. They are changing them on an on-going basis.

In my GPO I have already set "Do not set default client printer to be default printer in a session: Enabled

-I also have this set:

RD Session Host server fallback printer driver behavior: Enabled

Any help would be appreciated.

Major permission issue with 2008 R2 redmote desktop server

Morning All,

I have been trying to fix a few problems we are having on our new remote desktop server.

This is a new server that we set up a few days ago, and is now on site in a remote office, and ready to go.

We moved a couple of users onto the server yesterday to start testing it out, but have encountered some major problems that we have not seen before.

The server is 2008 R2, and has the session host, and licensing server roles installed, as well as file services (search and file server roles).

The problems we have are:

  • When trying to set up Outlook 2010 exchange account using auto setup, we get error code: 0x80070057
  • When opening MS Word, we get: "Your autocorrect file, \MSO2057.acl, could not be save. The file may be read only, or you may not have permission to modify the file"
  • When closing Word, we get: "Word cannot save or create this file. Make sure that the disk you want to save the file on is not full, write-protected, or damaged. (C:\normal.dotm)
  • Some users have managed to get their Outlook account setup, but get the same error code as point 1, when trying to open or move an e-mail
  • Windows search is also a problem, as searching from the start menu returns no results, and clicking on "See more results" gives an error: Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item.

My initial thoughts, where that the registry settings for the AppData folders per user, have not been set correctly, meaning that the files that are trying to be written, are attempting to save in the wrong location.

I could not see how to check this in the registry, but all the environment variables look to be ok compared to our functioning 2008 R2 RD server.

If anyone can offer any suggestions or advice, that would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Eds

High-Latency Connection Times Out with Name

I have an RDS environment with two RDS gateway servers in an F5 load-balanced farm and several back-end terminal servers.  Our datacenter is in Maryland and I have a user connecting from her home in Alaska over a VPN in Minnesota.  Ping results show an average of 150ms round-trip times but with little or no packet loss.  We have created signed pre-configured files for this user and when using either the FQDN or just DN of the terminal server, the step "Initiating Remote Connection...." will hang for a very long time (10+minutes) or timeout altogether.  If we substitute the internal IP address for the DN, the connection occurs almost instantly.  What could be causing this?  We have ensured that the RDS gateway servers have no problem resolving the server.

Thanks in advance.

Serial Port pull through RDP connection Server 2008 R2

I have a Windows XP 32 bit machine and a Server 2008 R2 64bit machine, the server is being used as a cloud server for multiple computers at an optometrist and hosts the data management software that usually interacts with a Topcon camera machine.

I have one PC the XP machine that has a Topcon camera attached to it and uses an RDP session to the cloud server to access the data management software. This machine takes special photos through a camera, this camera is connected to the XP machine using a usb to serial converter so the data comes through a com port. What I need to do is send this data to the server through a serial port. I have noticed under local resources on the RDP connection it 'should' allow me to push throguh the serial port but it's just not hapening. I can get it working on another server I was testing on, a server 2003 OS but just can't seem to make it happen on server 2008 R2.

Does anybody have any ideas as to why this isn't doing what it should?

Windows Server 2008 Remote Contol Session Problems

$

We recently built a new Windows 2008 x64 SP2 virtual machine.  After we RDP to the 2008 box we go into terminal services manager and try to remote control user logins.  Most of the other servers are Windows 3003 servers.  The mstsc.exe's that are being used to connect include 6.0.6000.16386, 6.0.6001.18000, and 6.0.6001.18564.  The problem is that when I go into terminal servers and try to remote control I get the hotkey message box, and then the screen blinks and goes right back to the terminal services manager screen.  To make things worse this only happens on about half of our 50+ users but the other half works fine.  I cannot find any correlation to server, rdp version or user security groups.  All clients are remote controllable from our old Windows 2003 server and we have never had any problems with remote control until we got this new 2008 machine in.  All stations are using single monitors and most are HP Thinclients.  I have enabled full remote control without user's permission on all default domain GPO.  What else could causing some of our sessions to be remote controllable and some to not be?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  If you need any addition info please let me know.  Thanks in advance for all your help.

How to only allow VPN connected users to access RemoteApps while a public SSL Certificate is issues?

$

Hi Everyone,

I have a Windows server that serves RemoteApps to remote users who connect by VPN. I also have an SSL Certificate bought from GoDaddy which is installed now on the server and is working fine. For security reason, I want to NOT allow any outsiders to be able to reach our domain which is:   https://apps.domain.com   and want only the VPN connected users to be able to brows https://apps.domain.com. I want to literally drop all packets for port 443 directed at the server from outside world on the main firewall.

How can I achieve this? This setup used to work for me just before I purchased an SSL Certificate as I was using private IP like 172.16.0.1 for the server and that was only accessible through VPN tunnel but now that I have an SSL certificate I have to use https://apps.domain.com and private IPs are not allowed in a certificate.

I appreciate any ideas on this. I am reading on split-DNS right now and not sure if that is the way to go.

Thanks
